TEACHER – FAMILY
PARTNERSHIP
ONE OF THE BEST
TEACHING STRATEGIES IS
TO GET PARENTS MORE
INVOLVED IN STUDENT
LEARNING.
BENEFITS OF TEACHER-FAMILY
RELATIONSHIP
• It helps both parties to understand the area where the student is
lacking and how to work on it collectively.
• It enhances academic improvement, i.e., influences students’
progress
• Children are more secure to express their need when they noticed
there is a cordial relationship between their teachers and parents
• It becomes easy for parents and teachers to measure their
success on the students
• It helps the student to show positive behavior at home and school
POTENTIAL BARRIERS TO TEACHER-FAMILY
RELATIONSHIP
1. Difference between teaching and parenting
Parents feel responsible for everything they do related to
their children and outcomes of the children’s performance. Thus
parent feel defensive. They feel they know their children best and
don’t need teachers advice
Teacher are also vulnerable to criticism especially young
teachers or those without children.
3. THE ISSUE OF TRUST
Teachers must build trust with the student and families.
Teachers may stereotype families and discriminate based on
sexual orientation, social class, education, marital status,
economic status, etc.
2. MANEUVERING OVER TURF
Parents want power over decisions since they’re
responsible for the outcome of their children.
Classrooms are teacher’s turf and some resent parents
invading their turf.
4. TIME
5. BUSYNESS
6. OLD IDEAS OF PARENT
INVOLVEMENT
7. ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES
8. PERSONAL PROBLEMS
FOUNDATIONS OF A
SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP
1. IMAGINE YOURSELF IN THEIR PLACE.
Building a relationship with families starts with empathy.
2. BEGIN WITH A POSITIVE INTERACTION — AND THEN KEEP
IT UP.
When you first reach out to families, start with something good.
Introduce yourself, share something you enjoy about their child, or
simply let them know you’re available if they’d like to speak.
3. FIND OUT HOW FAMILIES PREFER TO BE
REACHED.
Not all people are comfortable talking by videocall.
Others don’t have time for a phone call at certain times of
day.
4. GATHER YOUR THOUGHTS IN ADVANCE.
When it comes time to talk with families about your
concerns, draft what you want to say before the meeting
or phone call.
6. SET BOUNDARIES TOGETHER.
Let families know you’d like to establish a two-way
relationship that honors the parent or caregiver’s
knowledge of the child and your knowledge of
education.
7. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY AND BE SOLUTIONS-
ORIENTED.
8. ALWAYS FOLLOW UP
