Henry David Thoreau was an American author and philosopher in the 19th century known for works such as Walden and Civil Disobedience. In Civil Disobedience, he advocated refusing to pay taxes in protest of slavery and willingly going to jail for breaking unjust laws. His experiment living simply at Walden Pond influenced transcendentalist thought and demonstrated living with few possessions. Leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi drew inspiration from Thoreau's philosophy of nonviolent civil disobedience to enact social change.
