Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, and naturalist best known for his books Walden and Civil Disobedience. He lived for two years in a cabin near Walden Pond to emphasize the importance of nature. Thoreau went to jail for one night for resisting payment of taxes to protest slavery, which led him to write Civil Disobedience about minimizing government rule. He influenced later leaders like Gandhi and MLK with his advocacy of nonviolent civil disobedience. Thoreau died at age 44 from tuberculosis.

2. WHO WAS HENRY DAVID THOREAU
• Born: July 12, 1817 in Concord Massachusetts
• He was an author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax
resister, surveyor, and historian
• He was also a leader of the transcendentalist group

• Best known for Walden and “Civil Disobedience”
• First work was Aulus Persius Flaccus which was written in
1840
• Many of his works criticized slavery

• Written about Thoreau’s experience in his two years of living in

• In 1835 Henry David Thoreau developed Tuberculosis
• Eventually developed Bronchitis
• Died May 6, 1862 at the age of 44
