Henry David Thoreau believed in universal freedom and equality for all individuals regardless of race or gender. He advocated civil disobedience and wrote about living simply in nature in his book Walden. Thoreau opposed slavery and war, believing governments should serve the will of the people by protecting rights and promoting peace. He admired nature and believed observing it closely could help one understand their true self.
