MANAGING SYSTEM TASK
AND RESOURCES
1. TASK MANGER
2. RESOURCE MONITOR
Task Management
 Task Management is the process of managing
a task through its Life Circle. It involves
planning, testing tracking and reporting.
 Effective task management requires
managing all aspect of a task, including its
Status, Priority, Time, and Resources the task
uses.
What is task?
What is a Task
 Any piece of work that is undertaken or
attempted
 A specific piece of work required to be done
as a duty or for a specific fee
 (computing) A process or instance of
execution of a program
What is system resource manager?
System Resource Manager
A Tool used either by hardware to
alert software of a need or by
software to control a function of
hardware.
Resources: What are they?
 A resource, or system resource, is any physical or virtual
component of limited availability within a computer
system. Every device connected to a computer system is
a resource.
 Every internal system component is a resource. Virtual
system resources include files, network connections, and
memory areas.
 Managing resources is referred to as resource
management, and includes both preventing resource
leaks (releasing a resource when a process has finished
using it) and dealing with resource contention (when
multiple processes wish to access a limited resource).
 Your computer has many types of resources.
They include the CPU, video card, hard drive,
and memory. In most cases, the term "system
resources" is used to refer to how much memory,
or RAM, your computer has available. System
resources can also refer to what software is
installed on your machine. This includes the
programs, utilities, fonts, updates, and other
software that is installed on your hard drive. To
increase your available system resources, you
can close active programs or increase your total
system resources by adding more RAM
Why do computers run out of
Recourses?
 System resources are the parts within a computer that
are available to be used by the operating system and
other applications. The most notable of the system
resources is the amount of memory in use, but CPU time
should be considered here as well.
 Each time an application starts, the application will
request memory from the operating system and a slice
of CPU time to perform its function.
 In many cases, an "out of memory" message is
misleading, since your whole system really did not run
out of memory. Instead, certain areas of memory (called
"heaps") used by systems have run low on space.
 When any program begins running, it uses up some space in
the "system resources" area in memory. But, as you exit, some
programs do not give back system resources they were
temporarily using. Eventually the system will crash as it runs out
of memory. The crash happens sometimes if you start and close
many programs, even the same ones, without a periodic
reboot. This is which is called a resource leak or memory leak.
 When you tell your system to exit a program, the program is
supposed to give back the resources (memory) it was using.
But, because programs are written by humans, mistakes can
happen and the program may not give back all to the
operating system. This failing to "give back" is the "memory
leak," eventually leading to a message that your computer is
low on resources. Memory leaks can also be caused by
programs that automatically load every time you boot your
Windows system.
 Depending on the amount of memory available, the application
may open quickly, or may open a bit slower if less memory is
available when the application starts. Sometimes there is not
enough memory to get an application running right away, in which
case the operating system recognizes the lack of system resources
and will make an attempt to store some things in a swap file to allow
more memory to be available for the active applications.
 The swap file acts like memory but is contained on the hard disk of
the computer. When the RAM memory within a computer becomes
full, the operating system will page (or write) things out to the
computers swap file, freeing up RAM memory for programs in use. As
the swap file continues to grow, it can become full. This will cause
the operating system to produce warning messages indicating that
the swap file or virtual memory is full and the user will be instructed
to close some programs to free up system resources, allowing the
computer to function better. Many times, restarting the computer is
the best way to alleviate these warning messages.
 You can use Windows System Resource Manager to:
 Manage system resources (processor and memory) with preconfigured policies,
or create custom policies that allocate resources per process, per user, per
Remote Desktop Services session, or per Internet Information Services (IIS)
application pool.
 Use calendar rules to apply different policies at different times without manual
intervention or reconfiguration.
 Automatically select resource policies that are based on server properties and
events (such as cluster events or conditions) or changes to installed physical
memory or number of processors.
 Collect resource usage data locally or in a custom SQL database. Resource
usage data from multiple servers can be consolidated on a single computer
running Windows System Resource Manager.
 Create a computer group to help organize Remote Desktop Session Host
(RD Session Host) servers that you want to manage. Policies can easily be
exported or modified for an entire computer group.
