What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and
why?
What is film distribution?
Films are to share experiences, and letting everyone enjoy a time of escapism, be it through drama and excitement, comedy, horror or tragedy. Films also
inspire people, they convey strong emotions, and are able to say what people want to say but can't necessarily find the words to do so. This is why
films have to move away from a computer screen and be put into a real life perception/ setting. Lord Puttnam of Queensgate CBE is President of Film
Distributors’ Association
Movies are capable of enriching every aspect of our lives. They also influence the games we enjoy, the music we play, and they are able to inspire the
fashions and advertising images that are all around us.
However films can have an impact, both commercially and socially, to the extent that they truly connect with their audience. Just like any other product,
films only come to life when they can take control and make an impact upon their audience; for whom they were intended. It is the main goal for
distributors to identify and deliver the largest possible audience for every film
Distribution is a highly competitive business of launching and sustaining films. The distributor’s challenge is to bring each one to market by:
• identifying its audience
• considering why they’d go and see it
• estimating the revenue potential across all the formats of its release
• persuading exhibitors (cinema operators) to play the film
• developing plans and partnerships to build awareness of and interest in the film
• aiming to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits
The film industry is extremely product-driven: the films themselves are the main reason for buying tickets. There’s an deep-rooted desire for great stories
on screen as well as in print. Today more than ever, consumers decide themselves what information or ‘content’ to receive or reject, to access or delete.
What are the different
distribution companies?
•The major film distribution companies are known as the big six, this includes:
• Warner Bros. Pictures.
• 20th Century Fox.
• Paramount Pictures.
• Sony Pictures Entertainment
• Walt Disney Studios.
•There are also independent distribution companies such as:
• Altitude Film Distribution
• Arrow Films
• Vertigo Films
• Pinewood Pictures
Our film
We believe that one of the big 6 may be interested in investing into our film, as we believe our film shows
potential to go far. Since we have a clear and established story line and the opening sequence shows the
potential.
We have decided that our audience will be based across the world, this is because we felt this will hep our film
grow, as if it was to be taken by one of the big 6 this would help us to achieve our audience worldwide. As
they all have a wide fan base across the world therefore if they was to take over our film it would help boost
the production.
Our marketing strategies that we can use are adverts therefore allowing our film to appear onTV which is
watched by a wide audience. Also posters in large shopping centers to allow a large group of people passing
by recognise our film to help it grow. And once it is started to become more well known we can then put more
money into advertising on major channels that is watched by a even bigger audience.
