What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and
why?
There are 6 main media institutions that
dominate the industry and everyone is likely to
have heard about them at some point. They are
known as ‘The Big 6’ and include Walt Disney,
Warner Bros, Columbia, Universal and 20th
Century Fox and Paramount. These
conglomerates are constantly releasing
extremely high budget films that capture the
attention of millions of viewers.
If one of these film companies were responsible for
the distribution of our film, then it would reach a
huge audience and the distribution would have a
high chance of being successful but due to the fact
that our piece was simply a low budget piece
produced by people with little experience and
knowledge of filming means that it isn't even close to
the quality of the films produced by these industries
– therefore, this is a very unrealistic situation.
However, there are smaller institutions which are
more likely to be suitable to cater for our type of film.
If I had the opportunity to further develop my passion for film-
making and decided to choose a company to help me do this, I
would chose 'Film Independant'. They are responsible for
supporting people to make their movie by offering them a diverse
range of 'labs' to educate and develop their skills particularly
focusing on where they are with their project, it could be preparing
for their independent films, guiding them through the production
or process, developing their screenwriting skills to building them
an audience for the distribution of their film and holding events to
popularise their film to a potentially large audience base. After
researching into the company it is clear that they have the
appropriate experience and tools to guide a group of people with
our level of experience and knowledge of the industry and provide
us with the right skills to go on and be successful in the film
industry. They are also known for kindly providing grants in order
to professionalise and boost the quality of the films. I believe that
our group has exactly what it takes in terms of our ideas and
motivation and by pairing up with Film Independent we could
have the chance produce something amazing.
The previous picture is based around the distribution of the
company and the statistics are all from 2014. As you can see,
Film Independent is exceptional - through the use of creating
film festival events and showing screenings - at getting small
independent films shown to a wide audience base, for example,
their latest 'LA film fest' drew in an enthusiastic audience of
over 90,000. So there is no doubt that our film will be viewed by
a large amount of people.
Furthermore, I am confident that I have made the right choice of
company due to the fact that Film Independent if a non-profit
organisation. This confirms the idea that they are truly
dedicated and passionate to helping people like us to achieve
our dreams.
