Task 2 - main product and ancillary texts
Star image When we begun the production of a music video we had to pick a song. Although we were given the freedom recreate this song with a different band and different image the song choice would hugely influence the star image we would later construct around this song. This is because every song belongs to a genre that has its own image to an extent…
Genre Image From Hearing a song it is possible to categorise it into a genre and this can influence the image of the Act. For example: In the Task 2 introduction I talked about slipknot this is heavy metal and heavy metal has its own image, Shown here in photos.
Kyuss - Demon Cleaner We wanted to incorporate the genre image into our video. The genre of this song is punk metal this genre has several values attached to it: Aggressive. anti-authoritarian . Originality .
Aggression within our product Our video is aggressive because of this we had an aggressive narrative with the woman killing the man. we made the digipack aggressive by using lightning in the background on the front cover and harsh angles on the buildings. The poster is aggressive because it uses a red text and the black and white filter is intimidating as well as powerful towards the image that we are trying to portray.
Anti-authoritarian values in our product Anti-authoritarian is the characteristics to challenge presumed authority. Our video is Anti-authoritarian because it has a woman running on roofs at night ( shown in image ) and she is the dominant character in the narrative this subverts stereotypes as the male is portrayed as vunerable. Our digipack is Anti-authoritarian because we have dark empty streets that are quite decayed as if there is a lack of law and order The poster uses again this empty dark street and also has “Yella” written vertically which is unusual.
Originality in our product The Video incorporates originality with the “sin city” like special effects ( shown in image) that is unusual in a music video, we also had unrealistic backdrops that makes our video different. Our Digipack has a black and white back cover with the only colour in the picture being the lipstick on the woman. The vertical texts and unrealistic backdrops, by this I mean it is clear the band have been Photoshoped onto the background but that was the desired look this is the same with our poster.
Values and conventions We also wanted to add our own values to the product apart from those that are conventional within this genre. This makes our product a more of a niche product because the more values we incorporate perhaps the smaller the audience size will be. However having a niche market can also make our product seem more organic and there for be a longer term investment for record labels due to a more dedicated fan base.
Our Chosen Values We wanted to incorporate the following values into our product to make it seem more unique and organic because synthetic acts usually have much more vague values therefore attracting a larger audience. Our chosen values are: Sexual magnetism Female empowerment and stereotype subversion.
Sexual magnetism in our product Our video shows sexual magnetism with an attractive woman in leather in the narrative with some cleavage showing and in tight leather clothing. The digipack has the lead female on the back with a red lipstick and in tight clothing posing and hair blowing ( shown in image) Our poster conveys sexual magnetism using a red font that can symbolise passion and attraction we also have the band walking down the street dressed quite provocatively and they are posing.
Female empowerment and stereotype subversion within our product. The music video conveys female empowerment by having the killer as a woman, she is active and jumping on roof tops in tight “superhero like” clothing in a hero shot (shown here). She overpowers the male on several occasions. The digipack has a woman in a hero shot this is empowering her and making her seem like more of an intimidating figure. The poster shows the entire band with most of them being female and they are walking down a dark empty street looking very confident.
