3. I asked my peers what they thought
about my final design what they felt
were the good and bad points. The
main point that was put across was
my lack of columns, as in a
broadsheet you tend to have more
just two on a full page although with
my work i felt worked better just
being spread across two although if
I was to redo it I would take that
idea into consideration. Also having
my pull quote just in the middle of
one paragraph it could of been
across both instead although when I
did originally make this that was the
intension although when had made
it the text wrap around it made the
text look bad.
4. I then asked out of these
which did they feel worked
best and was their favourite
and why, the bottom tabloid
front cover was the biggest hit
because it related to the time
in which the story would have
been originally written and so
does make more sense when
I was making this I used the
style of an old tabloid that
wrote about this story in order
to make it look as close to
that as possible and so did
work, my favourite was the
top one as I prefer the
modern look although that
would be more suitable with a
different story.
5. I then asked for which they felt
was the better fanzine out of the
two, they decided that the bottom
again was the better of the two
which I agree with and I feel does
look more like a fanzine would
instead of the top one which is
mainly just block of text
surrounding an image whereas I
have included a variety of
different images all around
having text split up admittedly I
could of been more creative but
because there was a lot of text i
wanted to be able to be
understood easily.
6.
7. After creating a mock up of the flat plans that I had
already made after importing all my text and images
that I had sourced in I realised that using that layout
wouldn’t be the most appealing for the work I had
written. The normal style for a magazine for an
article like this wouldn’t be this way layed out but
since it was for a paper needed and work better in a
formal and nicely layed out format.
Trying not to leave to much white spice but nice sized
guttering between all the copy and all the images
and by doing so gives a better look overall. After
importing my first image I felt that sticking with a
black and white theme seemed the best option and
colour would of looked completely out of place, but
also since I was covering or writing my own version
of an old story it seemed more logical and would
appear to be more realistic as it fits in with the time
even though there was colour printing happening at
this time.
I used techniques that are seen most commonly
throughout papers such as a drop a drop capital for
the start of my report, using text warp in order to fit
text around images and also using it for a pull quote
which in itself is another technique, and is also well
fitted and would draw in attention which is the whole
idea behind using a pull quote as it should include
text from within page that would appeal and interest
the reader into reading the full story.
8. My second page layout concept of my news report
that I have written is inspired by looking at real
life news papers and how they are presented
which overall gives it the best look out of the
three that I have made overall. I started by
using a blank a4 sheet and using guides with 4
rows and 6 columns I was then able to spread
my work nicely out by working around the
margins and the boxes. As I liked the black and
white theme I felt that using the same images
again would be the best option and do work well
with the overall presentation of the article. The
techniques that I used were having the drop
capital for the beginning line of the whole body
of text as it most common with any news article.
I decided against having a pull quote as the
body of text fit perfectly in the areas that I
wanted it in and so if I was to add a pull quote
would disrupt the look of the overall piece and
the gap around it wouldn’t look as attractive
whereas at this stage looks clean which is my
key feature or the feature I try to at least stick to
as I want it to be presentable, easy to read but
admittedly having things jump out at the reader
is important in order to be attractive for the
reader to want to read it but the images would
draw them in. The amount of white space
throughout this piece is very minimal but not to
much that the work looks crowded as it is still
easily read and approachable without being
confused about the layout the most would be
seen around the title but that’s because the title
needs to be bold and needs to be seen easily.
9.
10. The first front cover design that I did using the times header worked well
and looks good and to me looks as though it could be used straight
away as its of a decent quality and looks like a tabloid front cover
although I only used a few different techniques and I felt I could change
the layout abit more even though I would stick to using the same sizes
of the written copy and the same images but just re-arrange the top with
the header as it is unusual to have a three word title one word under
each other. By doing so meant I would have to change sizes of fonts
and even move around some text in order to make it fit and keep it to
having a high quality finish that I would be happy with. I included a sub
heading which is there to add to the affect of the title of the piece, used
a drop capital for the start of the text and used a pull quote from with the
text in order to entice the readers, just to add the effect of a newspaper I
even included the ‘CYMK’ colours at the bottom of the page as you see
on most newspapers. This is my final piece for the front cover of a
tabloid and I feel I have achieved a standard that I am very happy with.
11. For task 8 using the same story we were
asked to make the front cover for a tabloid
newspaper, out of choice I used the sun as
my header, by looking through images of
what the front of the sun would normally look
like I was able to make up my own concept
that I feel could look relatable to them and
might even be used by them.
With the front of the sun its never just one
story they tend to include a few different in
order to attract the reader by showing off as
many of the stories included as possible, but
by doing this means they cant cover the
whole story just on the front page so they
would just include the beginning of the story
to be appealing and make them want to read
the rest of the story, and by adding ‘Read on
Page…’ gives them that inspiration to read
the rest of the story if its appealing to them.
They also tent to have white letters for
headers instead of white so it doesn’t look
like there is a lot of white space so instead in
more black space although on mine there's a
lot more than there would be on a real
newspaper.
12. After looking over my first attempt at a tabloid
newspaper I realised there was many different
little tweaks I could make to the one I have
already made and so I had a look at making it
closer to being the look of a tabloid, I changed
the font size and font face as the one I had used
originally didn’t have the look of what a paper
would normally and so by doing this meant I
could fill up more of the white space left around
the text. The text was all in one text when I did it
the first time but to allow for me to change the
spacing between each of the words I felt it would
be easier if I was to have them in three different
text boxes and would allow for me to then
choose a good spacing between each of the
works and mean the text could be as big as I
wanted with the space allocated.
I also included a drop capital into the text that is
there to try and entice the reader into seeing the
complete story as the white space around made
the text look to small and tight to read and by
adding this I felt give the text more space.
13. For my third attempt I used the same
story, headers and pictures but I decided to
include another story as I moved around my
title for the main story. I looked at a few
more different styled layouts for The Sun
and by looking at that decided I could vitiate
it and allow for another story to be included.
The Sun are well known for the puns in
headlines and headers and so I’ve done my
best in order to re-create this with the
stories of my choice. I also realised that The
Sun stay away from having white space on
the front and so needs to be completely
covered if possible, even though I feel it can
sometimes loom over the top I tried to
produce my own version that I felt was as
close as it could be to full.
I also decided for the main block of text I
would have in white and the back ground
black to match the headline and have it
seem as the though the text and image was
put onto a completely black background as
this seems to contrast more with the red of
the front page header and also means that
the most amount of attention is given to the
bold headline in white.
14. For my last design I thought I should try and
recreate what the paper would of looked like
at the time that this even that I have done my
story for actually occurred. In order to do so I
had a look at papers that were around at the
same time and that were the same sort of
style as the sun in order to create my own
version or perception of what I felt it could look
like with my story. It appears that the layout is
still the same in a many way with just having a
few different stories on the front page, only
have having a small part of the main story and
having the rest inside to read to entice
readers. To give it a more old styled effect look
I changed the opacity on the headline, header
and the images that are included this gives it a
warn out look in a way although would just of
been because the printers weren't at the same
standard as they are today. I then went in
search of finding a style of paper that looks
old fashioned and people create the old look
by staining paper with tea and so by finding
the most look a like to what old papers look
like I added it on top of my piece then send to
back so that everything would be on top and
then to finish it off change the opacity on that
so that it was as strong as it was so that it
looks a lot more realistic and not just tea
stained for effect.
15. For my first Fanzine design using my own
Fanzine that I have written myself I
designed starting with a black ground
seemed like the best style for it and have
white writing, after deciding this looked at
how I was going to spread out my text in a
way that I felt would suit a punk fanzine
and having it split into three different
sections in a font that I feel looks like
stylistic handwriting I feel is the most
appealing I could make the text loo and
have it fit in with the style of fanzine I'm
creating. Originally I had the title across
the top but I felt it would look better
somewhere else and I used a standard
font so I looked again o find one that would
relate to the house style and used that as
my heading for this text and then rotated
the text to go up the side of the page.
For the images that I included I used band
icons from this type of music I felt they
would be most relatable for this and so by
incorporating them it started to look like a
fanzine for this subculture, I didn’t want
colour on the page just black and white so
I only used icons that would suit the page
and make it look most appealing, adding
some behind the text and some on the
edges of the page but each also faded out
to make it look as though images were on
there first and the text added on top.
16. For my second fanzine i used the
same idea as my first having a black
background with white writing as it
makes the text look more bold and
stand out more and to me makes it
more appealing I changed the font for
the text but I kept the title’s font the
same as I feel I there isn’t better fonts
that I feel would be more appealing.
I had seen a layout that’s very similar
to how I have layed mine and I felt I
should try it with having two main text
boxes and a main picture in the middle
and for what I have does I felt that it
worked well, I started my text before I
had even written my title as fanzines
there's no start and finish it can be
layed out how ever and so just
changing little things like that can
affect your perception of the whole
fanzine and it works well for mine. The
picture that I sourced from the internet
works well within this as the text is
about punk fashion and this is a punk
symbol that has been stitched onto
some denim and so fits in with the
topic which is key when putting in
imagery.
17. My time management was well done I was able to get all my planning
done the day that the work was set which ment I was left with more time
in order to get my final pieces done for each different topic before I was
set more, I always knew if I didn’t have something done then id have to
stay behind but that was an incentive to get the work done but not
rushed to the best of my ability. For each part I was making at least 3
different parts and with this I was evaluating my work and being self
critical in order to make my next one better till I reached the standard I
wanted. Out of my three final images the most technical piece had to of
been my tabloid as I kept making little adjustments every time I made
one and sourcing all of my images but that was the piece I was most
happy with and so I feel spending the most amount of time going back
to was well worth it, it was my favourite of all three to of designed as I
felt the fanzine because it was mainly based around my subculture and I
have lost interest in it didn’t really appeal to me anymore whereas with
the others I was just adding in my story but I was able to make the
paper to own according.
