 dark brown/black viscous liquid consisting
of hydrocarbons and free carbons
 Obtained from destructive distillation of
organic materials
For therapeutic purposes, 4 sources of tar are used:
1.Coal tar
2.Wood tar
3.Petroleum tar
4.Bitumen tar

1) Antiproliferative activity
 Tars appear to act as keratolytic agents.
 inhibit excess proliferation/mitosis of epidermal cells
 suppression of DNA synthesis in hyperplastic skin
 Phenols are considered to be responsible.

 Bacteriostatic
 Anti-fungal
 antipruritic (anti-itch)
 anti- inflammatory
 antiseptic
 Astringent
 Pine tar absorbs odors
resin acids in pine tar are responsible
acetovanillone,
1,1′,3,3′‐tetraoxo‐2,2′‐bicyclopentyl
and its derivative in pine tar are
