2. Definition
“Any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on or
introduced to or applied to any part of human body for cleansing, beautifying,
promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance”.
Examples
Skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup
preparations, shampoos, hair colors, toothpastes, deodorants, etc.
1. Having more makeup has been positively correlated with women’s public self-
consciousness (Miller & Cox, 1982)
2. Cosmetics allow women to feel better about themselves (Cash, 1987, 1988)
3. Self-esteem / believe increases (Wright et al., 1970)
4. Enhances social interactions (Miller & Cox, 1982)

3. • Herbal cosmetics are safe because they are natural.
• Provides protection against degenerative skin conditions.
• Improve appearance by delivering nutrients necessary for healthy skin.
1. Do not show allergic reactions
2. Easily penetrate skin and hair follicles
3. Very effective in small quantity as compared to synthetic cosmetics
4. Easily available, found in large variety & quantity.
1. Requires long term therapy due to slower effects
2. Difficult to mask odor & taste.
3. Time consuming and complicated manufacturing process.
4. No Pharmacopoeia defines composition of any herbal cosmetics.

7. HAIR OIL:
This preparation is generally used to increase the growth of hair and remains healthy.
HAIR LOTION:
Has a stimulating effect upon the hair follicles, generally perfumed with oil of
rosemary.
HAIR COLORANTS:
These are preparations which are used for the coloring of the hairs. They enhances
the attractiveness of gray hair.
SHAMPOO:
A preparation of surfactant in suitable form like liquid, solid or powder, which when
used will remove surface grease, dirt, and skin debris from the hair shaft and scalp
without adversely affecting the hair and scalp.
