• There are currently approximately 850,000 people
living with dementia in the UK and experts believe
almost a quarter of them who have early onset of the
disease are first identified in hospital A&E
departments.
• 25 million of us in the UK population have a close
friend or family member with dementia.
Impacts on both the Person living with Dementia &
their loved ones
Background
• Listening to the views of Family carers and the local community.
• Establishing a meaningful, supportive and enabling service.
• Recognising the need for the provision of a holistic approach to enhance well
being and knowledge of patients living with Dementia, their loved ones and
staff…..In an acute hospital setting.

• Further embed the “Living well with Dementia” approach in the Acute
hospital setting
• Continue to work to improve awareness and reduce stigma
• Work towards ensuring that the voice of people with dementia and their
loved ones are heard when coming into Acute Hospital Environments
• Embed the collaborative approach within the local community
• Further research opportunities and service evaluation.
In view of the lack of Admiral Nurses in the Acute sector, this
development underpins the vision for an integrated approach to
healthcare delivery, by bridging the gap and linking Acute
hospital care provision with the continuity of care in the Primary
care setting for patients living with dementia and their carers
Dementia is Everybody’s Business.

  • 2. • There are currently approximately 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and experts believe almost a quarter of them who have early onset of the disease are first identified in hospital A&E departments. • 25 million of us in the UK population have a close friend or family member with dementia. Impacts on both the Person living with Dementia & their loved ones Background
  • 3. • Listening to the views of Family carers and the local community. • Establishing a meaningful, supportive and enabling service. • Recognising the need for the provision of a holistic approach to enhance well being and knowledge of patients living with Dementia, their loved ones and staff…..In an acute hospital setting. • A new and innovative approach Why Admiral Nursing?

  • 6. • Preventative role • Positive experience for patients and carers • Positive experience for staff, who feel supported and informed • Development of patient/ carer experience initiatives • Tailored support and advice • Promoting a positive self-image • Non-pharmacological interventions • Seamless and inclusive approach to support on discharge • Carers have had lots of ideas on how the service could be developed Key Benefits

Next steps…….. • Further embed the “Living well with Dementia” approach in the Acute hospital setting • Continue to work to improve awareness and reduce stigma • Work towards ensuring that the voice of people with dementia and their loved ones are heard when coming into Acute Hospital Environments • Embed the collaborative approach within the local community • Further research opportunities and service evaluation.
  • 8. In view of the lack of Admiral Nurses in the Acute sector, this development underpins the vision for an integrated approach to healthcare delivery, by bridging the gap and linking Acute hospital care provision with the continuity of care in the Primary care setting for patients living with dementia and their carers Dementia is Everybody’s Business. And Finally……….
