In 2015, USAID/Mali and the government of Mali requested the HFG project to conduct a Management Assessment of the office of the Secretary General (SEGAL) in the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene. The SEGAL’s office provides senior guidance, oversight, and control to the full range of the ministry’s health programs and activities. The SEGAL and his five Technical Advisers supported by three seconded technical specialists constitute the senior operating level of the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene. This number is insufficient to accomplish all that is required of the SEGAL office. The Management Assessment provided in-depth analysis and recommended steps over the short, medium, and long term to address issues including the optimum number of SEGAL’s team and potential changes in organization and process that will permit the office to efficiently and effectively fulfill its responsibilities. The work began with designing the Management Assessment to incorporate the SEGAL’s priorities e.g. the number and composition of his senior Technical Advisers so that the Office would better understand the changes needed to increase its managerial effectiveness in its oversight of Mali’s health programs. The Management Assessment found that existing Technical Advisors spent up to 60% of their time on unplanned and unforeseen tasks, preventing them from focusing on strategic tasks that they are supposed to do. Such findings led the Ministry to use its own resources to recruit three new technical advisors to alleviate the workload of the SEGAL office, and to increase efficiency through a reallocation of tasks within the team. The Management Assessment provided evidence of the added-value of the Technical Advisors and the justification to depart from the government hiring freeze in place at the time.

Virtual Leadership Development Program

This document provides a final report on the Virtual Leadership Development Program (VLDP) for family planning and reproductive health monitoring and evaluation (M&E) teams from February to April 2010. 11 teams from 6 countries participated in developing leadership skills and creating action plans to address M&E challenges. 10 teams successfully completed the program by developing measurable, time-bound action plans. Early results indicate the plans have led to improved workgroup climates and 71% of teams beginning implementation, focusing on challenges like improving data quality and coordination of health worker training. Participant feedback was very positive, with 92% reporting organizational changes and 100% recommending the program.

Rodriguez, Gajinder Pal Singh and Jim Setzer Published: May 31, 2014 Resource Description: A highly functioning national health information system (HIS) facilitates transparent and evidence-based decision making that ultimately leads to improvements in the health status of a country’s population.1 Rather than reflecting a single structure through which routine health statistics in a country are reported, most country health information systems are made up of multiple sub-systems that may or may not be well-coordinated, potentially collect some of the same information, and typically place the largest burden for reporting on those at the lowest levels of the health system, the primary health care facility staff. All of these characteristics present risks to the ability of the health system to function efficiently and effectively. The Health Metrics Network (HMN) Framework, published in 2008, provides a useful lens for viewing the efforts of the Republic of India to improve the production and availability of health information at all levels of its health system, from health facility to district, state, national and international levels, and to use that information to improve health outcomes. The objectives of this report are to use the HMN Framework to examine, organize and summarize some of the publicly available written information on the Indian HIS and to serve as a resource tool for stakeholders throughout the Indian health system pursuing efforts to strengthen the HIS. This report is intended to highlight the progress that has been made to date and to discuss some of the gaps in the Indian HIS using the HMN Framework, which can then form the basis of discussions on HIS strengthening priorities.

Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Some users approach PGx workflows by means of array genotyping or what seems to be a growing trend of adding the star allele calling to the existing NGS pipeline for whole genome data. Luckily, both approaches are supported with the VarSeq software platform. The genotyping method being used will also dictate what the scope of the tertiary analysis will be. For example, are your PGx reports a standalone pipeline or would your lab’s goal be to handle a dual-purpose workflow and report on PGx + Diagnostic findings. The purpose of this webcast is to: Discuss and demonstrate the approaches with array and NGS genotyping methods for star allele calling to prep for downstream analysis. Following genotyping, explore alternative tertiary workflow concepts in VarSeq to handle PGx reporting.
