Between a rock and a simulated space: Lava inundation probabilityJulie Herrick
"The combination of geologic field mapping and geospatial methods allowed us to demonstrate the probability of lava flow inundation for an important location on the N flank of Mauna Loa. We focused on the 2.5 x 5.5 km area from radial vents, rift zones, and the summit crater that encompasses the NOAA weather station (MLO). Field investigations conducted in 2005 determined that 30 unique geologic units cross this study area and originated from the summit, radial vents, and the NERZ. We combined two DEM-based simulation models to provide a detailed examination of lava flow paths with the purpose of developing a hazard assessment for the NOAA facility. Two GIS computer software programs (BASIN1 and VORIS) were used to analyze the digital terrain based on a 10 m DEM in order to outline possible inundation zones. The advantage of the BASIN1 results is that they provide clear delineations of the flow network. Subsequently, preliminary inundation zones were drawn based on model results. Additional information provided by VORIS defines the probability of each flow network branch being inundated. By overlapping the inundation zones with the map of inundation probability within a 50-year time interval, it is clear that the NOAA Facility should not be affected by lava flows originating from the NERZ. The main threats are from lavas originating from the western edge of Moku`aweoweo and the potential formation of radial vents."

The Nigeria Benue Trough is an intracratonic rift structure whose evolution is related to the early Cretaceous opening of the South Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Guinea. Study of the lower Benue Trough has revealed that the lower Benue Trough is rich in organic matters and as such capable of yielding significant quantity of hydrocarbons. The Eze-Aku shale in Ibii area is located in the lower part of Benue Trough. Five (5) representative Turonian Eze-Aku Shale samples were collected and analyzed to assess the petroleum generative potential by sediment logical analysis. The Shale (Eze-Aku Shale) is dark grey in color and highly fissile. From analysis carried out the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content of the Eze-Aku Shale sample from the five (5) sections ranges from 0.51 to 1.17wt. %. The amount of Organic Carbon Content exceeds the minimal 0.5 wt. % threshold for a potential source rock, which indicates that the Shale can generate oil and gas, also the percentage of Organic Matters (OM) as shown ranges from 91.90% to 98.00% suggest a high contribution of organic matter which supports the accumulation of hydrocarbon.

The source rock maturation levels of six wells in GABO and WABI fields, Niger delta sedimentary basin were evaluated using vitirinite reflectance and geothermal data. The results of the analysis show that the source rocks are mature. Vitrinite reflectance was measured and analyzed in all wells containing greater than 1.0 percent Total organic carbon content (TOC). The thermal alternation index (TAI) values obtained show that temperature was sufficiently good to generate hydrocarbons in the source rock indicating the maturity of the source rock. The GABO and WABI fields have a good range of Vitrinite reflectance values which probably indicate the temperature that were reached in the fields. The average reflectance of Vitrinite in GABO and WABI fields are 0.35 and 0.75, respectively. These values are consistent and suggest that basinal source rocks have begun to generate hydrocarbon.

Geoelectrical and Hydrochemical Assessment of Groundwater for Potability in E...Premier Publishers
Geoelectrical and hydrochemical investigations were carried in order to determine the potentials and quality of groundwater in Ebonyi North, Southeastern Nigeria. These methods were also selected to determine their economy and accuracy compared to seismic method. Fifteen (15) vertical electric sounding (VES) survey were conducted using the Schlumberger configuration in order to evaluate the character of the aquifers in the studied locations while twelve (12) groundwater samples were collected from boreholes for hydrochemical analysis. Geoelectric sections derived from modelling of the VES data with the interpex IX1D software reveal 3 to 5 subsurface layers. The lithologic succession comprises of topsoil, lateritic clay, partially weathered, weathered and fractured Asu River shale. The weathered and fractured layers constituted the productive water bearing or aquiferous zones of good groundwater potentials. Hydrochemical analysis of groundwater samples reveals that the pH range from 7.8 to 8.8, electrical conductivity from 10.0 to 1754.00 μS/cm, total dissolved solid from 10.0 to 786.0 mg/l and total hardness from 14.0 to 271.0 mg/l. The analytical results present the concentration of the ions in the following order: Mg > Ca > Na > K and Cl > SO4 >HCO3> NO3 > CO3. Piper trilinear diagram reveals only one water type, with Ca and Cl as the major dominant ions. The major ions concentrations are within recommended standard for drinking, hence the groundwater from the area is suitable for drinking and domestic purposes.

This paper titled Seismic Refraction Survey for Groundwater Potentials of Southern Paiko Area.
Niger State, Nigeria, employs the service of seismic refraction survey method. A twelve-channel seistronix was
used for the data collection. The profiles were marked at 100 m intervals, while the profiles lines traversed
1000 m (1km). A Total of 44 spreads were shot. Data were collected, Time – distance (T-S) graphs were plotted
using matrix laboratory software, velocities of the underlying layers obtained and depths to the refractor layer
computed and geologic cross sections were obtained. The results obtained gave an overview of the lateral
variation in the lithological changes of the subsurface earth materials in the surveyed area. The basement
surface varied in depth, from 10.16 m to a maximum of 14.80 m. weathered layer velocities ranging from 809
m/s to 3612 m/s and consolidated layer velocities varying between 2858 m/s to 9696 m/s. Four shot points were
delineated as aquifer potentials of the area having depth to refractor varying between 13.70 m and 14.80 m with
overburden velocities ranging from 1940 m/s to 3462 m/s. The rock materials identified in the surveyed area are
chiefly sand, saturated clay, gravel, gneiss, igneous rock and granite.
Coral Reefs: Challenges, Opportunities and Evolutionary Strategies for Surviv...rsmahabir
Coral reefs are one of the most diverse marine ecosystems on Earth. They are renowned hotspots of species biodiversity and provide home to a large array of marine plants and animals. Over the past 100 years, many tropical regions’ sea surface temperatures have increased by almost 1 °C and are currently increasing at about 1–2 °C per century. Corals have very specific thermal thresholds beyond which their temperature sensitive symbiont Zooxanthellae becomes affected and causes corals to bleach. Mass bleaching has already caused significant losses to live coral in many parts of the world. In the Caribbean, the problem of coral bleaching has especially been problematic, with as much as 90% bleaching in some parts of the Caribbean due to thermal anomalies in some instances. This paper looks at the key role that temperature plays in the health and spatial distribution of coral in the Caribbean. The relationship between coral and symbiont is examined along with some evolutionary strategies necessary to ensure the future survival of coral with the changing climate.
Integrated Geophysical Studies Over Parts of Central Cross River State for th...iosrjce
A total of 71 Vertical Electrical Soundings were carried out using Schlumberger electrode
configuration for the evaluation of groundwater potential in parts of central Cross River State, Nigeria.
Interpretation of data showed three to six geoelectric layers. Productive shallow and deep aquifer zones were
identified at depths of 60 m and 150 m respectively, corresponding to a resistivity range of 100-500 Ωm for
shallow aquifers and 1000-2500 Ωm for deep aquifers respectively. The lithologic data of the aquifers revealed
sand/sandstone and very coarsed grained sand/fractured basement, respectively. Seismic refraction survey was
also carried out within the same study area for the foundation study of rocks. The studies revealed an average
thickness of 4.5 m (probably sand/clay) and 10.0 m (probably gravelly sand/shale) for the first and second
layers respectively. The range of velocities for the first three layers are 602 m/s to 960 m/s, 378 m/s to 2,424 m/s
and 1,587 m/s to 5,368 m/s, respectively, indicating that the soils in the area are not homogeneous. It is inferred
from the relative high values of calculated elastic constants in most of the locations, that the soils are well
consolidated and as such suitable for large engineering construction in such locations, while in the rest of the
locations the soils are considered unconsolidated and unsuitable for large construction work due to the relative
low values of the elastic constants.

Hydrothermal vents occur in both the
North and South Basin of the caldera.
They form a vent field in the NE part
of the North Basin that is 200 by 300m
in extent. The vents form hundreds of
1 to 4m diameter mounds of
yellowish bacterial mat that are up to
1m high. Temperatures in the mound
are around 15 to 17 C or about 5 C

Basin hydrothermal vent field is
located in line with the normal fault
system of the Kolumbo rift, and also
near the margin of a shallow intrusion
that occurs within the sediments of the
North Basin. Similar vent mounds
occur in the South Basin, where most
of the low temperature vents are seeps
along a ridge separating the West and
South Basins and on the submarine
flanks of the Kameni volcanic islands.

First of all, some introductory information about volcanism in the Aegean sea.The volcanoes of the Aegean volcanic arc occur both onshore at the areas of Methana,Poros, Milos, Santorini, Kos and Nisyros and offshore like: Pausanias in the western Saronikos GulfAntimilos Volcanic Fieldthe Kolumbo volcano and other small cones northeast of Santorini in the submarine area around Nisyros.Submarine volcanoes occupy a significant area in the active Hellenic Volcanic Arc either in the form of independent features or as an offshore continuation of the volcanic islands. The average basal depth of the volcanoes occurring in the south Aegean Sea is approximately 600 meters. The volcanic relief may reach up to 1200m creating steep cones or domes. The volcanic structure is hosted within extensional neotectonic basins/grabens crosscutting the Plio-Quaternary sedimentary sequences. The large marginal faults of the basins are usually normal faults sometimes associated to textural NE-SW strike-slip zones. The prevailing tectonic orientation is NE-SW in Santorini and Nisyros and NW-SE in Methana and Milos, following the general geometry of the volcanic arc. E-W faults are observed to disrupt the previous arc-parallel NW-SE structures in Methana and Milos.
And a few words about the submarine area of Santorini caldera. The maximum diameter of the caldera is nearly 11 km long in a north-south direction (longest axis), while the minimum east-west diameter is approximately 7 km long (short axis). The deepest point of the caldera bottom is 389 m below sea level, while the caldera walls are approximately 300 m altitude above sea level. The floor of Santorini caldera was explored with ROV Hercules. A large number of hydrothermal vents were discovered, but in contrast to the high-temperature venting found in Kolumbo submarine volcano, only relatively low-temperature venting was observed within the Santorini caldera. They form a vent field in the NE part of the North Basin that is 200 - 300 m in extent. The vents form hundreds of 1 to 4 meter diameter mounds, covered by a yellowish bacterial mat, that are up to 1 meter high. The temperature in these mounds is around 15 to 17° C or about 5° C above ambient temperature. The North Basin hydrothermal vent field is located in line with the normal fault system of the Kolumbo rift, and also near the margin of a shallow intrusion that occurs within the sediments of the North Basin. Similar vent mounds occur in the South Basin, where most of the low temperature vents are seeps traced along a ridge which separates the West and South Basins. Some more active vents also occur at the shallow depths of the submarine flanks of the Kameni volcanic islands. Here is a photo of Hercules collecting a push core of a yellow bacterial colony and sediment from the hydrothermal vent field in the northern basin of Santorini and a video, in which the ROV examines the seabed morphology at the same area.
