• Some problems are super complex
• The world needs people who can tackle
complex social problems

Self-directed learning
• There will be no formal weekly lectures
• You will work in groups in each lecture and
seminar slot, every week
• We will meet with your group every three weeks
for you to explain how far you have got and to
seek help
• You will work through each of the 5 Units of the
handbook, approximately one per fortnight
• You record your weekly progress on NILE

• Each Unit has a number of activities and
practical sessions to work on- alone or
together in groups. Each unit has ONE
‘electronic activity’ or ‘etivity’ to work on
alone, which includes giving and receiving
feedback from others
• Not assessed or marked, but skipping them
leads to poor progress and outcomes

• Social Venture Canvas 60%
– a poster style summary of all your work, and
providing a plan for your proposed solution to a
social problem
• External Peer Feedback 40%
– Put details of your proposed solution on an
external website and elicit feedback
– Write up the internal and external feedback you
receive and explain what you would do differently

  • 2. Learning to solve problems • Society is full of problems that need addressing • Workplaces are full of problems that need solving • Some problems are super complex • The world needs people who can tackle complex social problems 2

Self-directed learning • There will be no formal weekly lectures • You will work in groups in each lecture and seminar slot, every week • We will meet with your group every three weeks for you to explain how far you have got and to seek help • You will work through each of the 5 Units of the handbook, approximately one per fortnight • You record your weekly progress on NILE Journals/Blogs 3

Each unit has ONE ‘electronic activity’ or ‘etivity’ to work on alone, which includes giving and receiving feedback from others • Not assessed or marked, but skipping them leads to poor progress and outcomes 5
  • 6. Assessed Work • Social Venture Canvas 60% – a poster style summary of all your work, and providing a plan for your proposed solution to a social problem • External Peer Feedback 40% – Put details of your proposed solution on an external website and elicit feedback – Write up the internal and external feedback you receive and explain what you would do differently 6
