COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, Shegaon
Introduction
 The electric eel is a freshwater fish which have ability to
use electric voltage through its organ for hunting its pray.
 Eel use different levels of voltage which depends upon
hunting, steady state etc. Such low level voltage give rise
to interest in its capability of generating power.
 To generate power in large scale into river amazonia in
brazil, a novel structure of an aquarium-corral which is the
cell for eels power generation is proposed.
Biological properties of electric
eel
•Electric eel lives in freshwater characterised by pH varying
from 5.0 to 7.0,conductivity commonly from 30uS/cm to
100uS/cm and temperature up to 25°C.
•They have respiratory organ inside the mouth, which
enhances the level of oxygen absorbed. so they are
mandatory air breathers., the interval between two breathes
is five minutes.
•There body can reach 2.5m and they can weigh up to 20kg.
Electrical properties of electrical eel
 Electric eel have three organs named the main organ, the
hunters organ, the sachs organ which act simultaneously when
eel aims to kill pray.
 The discharge current can reach up to 1A and voltage up to
600V in large electric eels.
 During this time electric eel generate a power of approximately
0.6 kW.
 Electrocyte cells is the main reason why electric eel can produce
electric voltage. There around 6000 electrocytes are there on
eels body which cover around 4/5 part of there body length.
How electric eel generate
electricity?
 Electrocytes contain high concentration of potassium ions k+ and
low concentration of sodium ions Na+.
 When eel find some pray acetylcholine a neurotransmitter
activates the electrocytes cells due to which electrocytes
membrane get open and Na+ ions rapidly enters the cells and on
the other side K+ ions leave the cell.
 The discharge occurs in short pulses lasting for 30msec and the
power averaged over a minutes exceeds 1/30 of watt.
 By collecting the continuously emitted electric power we can
collect power in order of few miliwatts.
Equivalent circuit of electric eel
Behaviour of electric eel in
different scenario
 Electric under still water
 Electric ell under stress
 Electric eel receiving a pray
Electrical circuit used for testing
behaviour of electric eel
Electric eel under still water
 In this situation electric eel only uses low voltage for
communication and navigation.
 Graph for voltage is given below
Electric eel under stress
 In this situation electric eel can not provide steady amount
of power.
 As there is some physical limit of acetylcholine to activate
the electrocyte cell because the amount of ions are not
infinite.
Electric eel receiving pray
 When electric eel finds a pray, eel emits a pulse of high
voltage which kills or stun its pray.
 The value of voltage depends upon how hungry eel is.
 Further the eel reduces the magnitude of voltages, as shown
below in the graph.
Structure for electric eels energy
harvesting
Calculation of voltage:
 Pe = 6.05ne [mW], where Pe is the power furnished by the
eels and ne is the number of eels.
 The Pe−peak = 24Pe [W], where Pe−peak is the power
delivered by the batteries solely during the peak.
 If we consider 400 electric eels connected to one PS,
storing energy all the day results in Pe −peak = 400 · 24 h ·
0.006 W = 57.6 Wh.
Conclusion:
 From this experiment we concluded that the single electric
eel can generate power up to 6.05mW.
 The plant of electric eels can generate energy about 60Wh
in a single day.
 This system can rise as a good source of electricity in
reinforced area of amazon river in brazil.
