The document discusses the lack of career paths and strategic roles for developers in higher education and research. Developers are often employed on short-term contracts and not invited to contribute strategically due to fears of being seen as too technology-driven. This wastes talent and does not provide developers with opportunities to contribute value. The author proposes addressing this by creating conditions to give developers a strategic voice, such as events to empower and engage developers, direct challenges to collaborate, and exploring the role of a strategic local developer who can exploit cloud technologies in a local context.

JAX DevOps 2019: "Creating an Effective Developer Experience for Cloud-native...Daniel Bryant
In a productive cloud native development workflow, individual teams can build and ship software independently from each other. But with a rapidly evolving cloud-native landscape, creating an effective developer workflow using a platform based on something like Kubernetes can be challenging. You are all creating software to support the delivery of value to your customers and to the business, and therefore, the developer experience from idea generation to running (and observing) in production must be fast, reliable, and provide good feedback. During this talk, Daniel will share with you several lessons learned from real world consulting experience working with teams deploying to Kubernetes.
Key takeaways include: Why an efficient development workflow is so important; a series of questions to ask in order to understand if you should attempt to build a PaaS on top of Kubernetes (everyone needs a platform, but how much should be built versus integrated versus bought?); a brief overview of developer experience tooling for Kubernetes, and how this domain could evolve in the future; the role of Kubernetes, Envoy, Prometheus, and other popular cloud-native tools in your workflow; and key considerations in implementing a cloud-native workflow.
Release Engineering Downstream of an OpenStack ProjectRainya Mosher
Presentation given at OSCON 2015 Open Cloud Day on 7/21/2015
For open source projects such as OpenStack, being able to effectively build, release, and deploy upstream code into a production environment is as much art as science. Using the experience gained from more than three years in OpenStack operations, we will share best practices and tools to create a sustainable and repeatable release engineering process for your own open source development needs.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. the role of ‘developer’ is not valued
• very few developers make it into senior management in higher education and
research
• developers are not invited to contribute at a strategic level for fear of being
seen to be ‘technology driven’
• developers come and go, often on very junior and short-term contracts -
therefore not recognised and trusted
• we have a rich & continuous source of talent from our student cohorts
• this means that there is little investment in developers
• consequently, we don’t get the best value from our developers (through no
fault of their own!)
