SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
INTRODUCTION
• The supply-chain management (SCM) has become very critical to
manage risk, dynamism, and complexities of global sourcing. A
totally integrated supply chain is required for the company to get
gain the maximum benefits.
• The objectives of the supply chain and the performance
measurements need to be understood in order to build the most
effective supply chain. Performance measurements provide an
approach to identify the success and potential of supply
management strategies.
• One major aspect of the SCM is to select the right sources of
supply in the global business environment that can support
corporate’s strategy. Contrary to the conventional adversarial
relationships, effective SCM in the new competition suggests
seeking close relationships in the long term with less number of
partners.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (SCM)
• A supply chain is characterized by the flow of goods, services,
money, and information both within and among business entities
including suppliers, manufacturers, and customers.
• It also includes all types of organizations engaged in
transportation, warehousing, information processing, and
materials handling.
• Sourcing, procurement, production scheduling, manufacturing,
order processing, inventory management, warehousing, and,
finally, customer service are the functions performed throughout
the supply chain.
• The ultimate goal of SCM is to meet customers’ demand more
efficiently by providing the right product, in the right quantity, at
the right location, on the right time, and in the right condition.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
• Value Chain
• Supply side- raw materials, inbound logistics and production
processes
• Demand side- outbound logistics, marketing and sales.
• Supply chain is the system by which organizations source, make and
deliver their products or services according to market demand.
• Supply chain management operations and decisions are ultimately
triggered by demand signals at the ultimate consumer level.
• Supply chain as defined by experienced practitioners extends from
suppliers’ suppliers to customers’ customers.

WHAT IS SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
Supply Chain Management Framework
• SUPPLY CHAIN INCLUDES :
– MATERIAL FLOWS
– INFORMATION FLOWS
– FINANCIAL FLOWS
• SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT IS FACILITATED BY :
– PROCESSES
– STRUCTURE
– TECHNOLOGY
• SUPPLY CHAIN SERVES TWO FUNCTIONS:
– PHYSICAL
– MARKET MEDIATION
SUPPLY CHAIN AND DEMAND CHAIN
• Demand chain is defined as the system by which organizations manage sales
and distribution of products and services to end users.
Conceptually incorrect to look at demand chain separately Look at the pipe as a
whole.
But is there a pipe at all?
– More a network
– Not necessarily linear
• Value chain orchestration rather than controlling the flow through the
pipe.
A network of independent and interdependent organizations mutually and
cooperatively working together to control, manage and improve the flow of
materials and information from suppliers to end users.
THE STEPS INVOLVED
Step1- Designing the supply chain
– Determine the supply chain network
– Identify the levels of service required
Step 2 - Optimizing the supply chain
Determine pathways from suppliers to the end customer
– Customer markets to Distribution centers
– Distribution centers to production plants
– Raw material sources to production plants
– Identify constraints at vendors, plants and distribution centers
– Get the big picture
Step 3- Material flow planning
• Determine the exact flow and timing of materials
• Arrive at decisions by working back from the
projected demand through the supply chain to the raw
material resources
• Techniques
Step 4 - Transaction processing and short term
scheduling
• Customer orders arrive at random
• This is a day to day accounting system which tracks
and schedules every order to meet customer demand
• Order entry, order fulfillment and physical
replenishment
INFORMATION FLOWS IN SUPPLY
CHAIN MANAGEMENT
• Information is overriding element
• Need for databases
• Master files: Information about customers, products, materials,
suppliers, transportation, production and distribution data- do
not require frequent processing.
• Status files- heart of transaction processing- track orders and
infrastructure status- updated daily.
• Essentially using the same information to make all plans right
from structuring the network to processing every day supply
chain tasks.
WHAT IS SUPPLY CHAIN?
• A supply chain is a system of organizations, people, activities, information,
and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to
customer.
• Supply chain activities involve the transformation of natural resources, raw
materials, and components into a finished product that is delivered to the
end customer.
• A supply chain is actually a complex and dynamic supply and demand
network.
SCM aims four major goals:
1) waste reduction
2) time compression
3) flexible response
4) unit cost reduction
DEFINITION OF SUPPLY CHAIN
MANAGEMENT?
• The Supply Chain Management (scm) is the oversight of
materials of information and finances as they more in a
process from supplier to manufacturer to whole to
retailer to consumer.
• It’s involves to coordinating and integrating these flows
both and companies.
• —The concept of Supply Chain Management is based on
two core ideas.
FIGURE OF SCM
Supply chain performance:
performance represents achievement amount of company to financial and
market objectives.
• Internal supply chain
Internal supply chain refers to the chain of activities within a company that
concludes with providing a product to customer.
• External Supply chain
External supply chain facing environmental factors that can affect a direct and
indirect on the supply chain.
The Advantages of Supply Chain
Management Systems
Effective supply chains give businesses a competitive advantage in the
marketplace and help mitigate risks associated with acquiring raw
materials and delivering products or services.
• Quality Assurance
• Inventory Buffers
• Increased Profits
• Reduced Costs
• Increased Efficiency
• Increased Output
• Shipping Options
• Risk Mitigation
OBJECTIVES OF S C M.
1) Services Orientation.
2) System Orientation
3) Competitiveness and Efficiency.
4) Minimizing the time.
5) Minimizing Working in process.
6) Improving Pipeline Visibility.
7) Improving Quality.
8) Improving Visibility Demand.
9) Reduces Transportation Cost.
10) Reduces Warehousing Cost.
FACTORS INFLUENCING SUPPLY
CHAIN MANAGEMENT
• Consumer Demand.
• Globalization.
• Competition.
• Information & Communication.
• Government Regulations.
• Environments.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT IN GARMENTS INDUSTRIES
• It is very important to garment industry.
• Supply Chain Management (SCM) is an essential element to
operational efficiency. SCM can be applied to customer
satisfaction and also garments industry success, as well as
within societal settings, including medical missions; disaster
relief operations and other kinds of emergencies; cultural
evolution; and it can help improve quality of life.
TECHNOLOGY IN SUPPLY CHAIN
• The internet & the web can be very effective to
communication enhancers.
• Software includes Demand forecasting tools and
planning tools to allow all S.C members to coordinate to
their activities. ( And adjust their production levels)
• Software can allow members to.
• Review past performance.
• Predict future Production levels of products.
THE CONCEPT OF SUPPLY CHAIN
MANAGEMENT
The concept should be the following for a fruitful supply chain
management:
• Timely delivery at customer’s end.
• Proper quantity to reach at destination.
• Intact material.
• Reasonable cost.
• Customer must not suffer because of non-availabilities of raw
material.
• Even the small quantity must not matter in reaching at customer
end.
• With proper planning the raw material dispatch should be in
such a way that customer must not suffer because of any delay or
unforeseen incidences such as road condition, traffic jam, etc.
CONCLUSION
1. With the growing demands of material and that of business, the
Supply Chain Management has taken an important role throughout
the world.
2. It has taken its own shape in the textile industries where large
quantities are in demand with varieties of product range.
3. In the textile industries, there are high market fluctuations which
make the Supply Chain more critical and hence an appropriate
management is required in this industry.
4. The cost of diesel and fuel price has also direct impact on this
Supply Chain and the management needs to be more systematic.
5. At every stage of demand and supply, proper production planning
is very much essential.
