At UVic, we wanted to gain a better understanding of the technology devices students bring and use at campus, so we surveyed students to gather data on the ownership and/or usage of: laptops, cellphones, tablets, email, collaborative document editing, desktop video, note taking, file backup, printing, and social-media.
Our project goals included:
- Discover technologies students were bringing with them to school and their use.
- Explore ways to use personal technology for research and engaging instruction.
- Identify means to provide equitable access to technologies for students who cannot afford to purchase it for themselves.
By the end of the session, participants will have a clear view of the technologies UVic students bring with them to school, as well as some potential ways those tools can be leveraged to provide more engaging instruction and better services to students.

RISKS AND REMEDIES IN E-LEARNING SYSTEMIJNSA Journal
One of the most effective applications of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is the emergence of E-Learning. Considering the importance and need of E-Learning, recent years have seen a drastic change of learning methodologies in Higher Education. Undoubtedly ,the three main entities of E-Learning system can be considered as Student, Teacher & Controlling Authority and there will be different level, but a good E-Learning system needs total integrity among all entities in every level. Apart from integrity enforcement, security enforcement in the whole system is the other crucial way to organize the it. As internet is the backbone of the entire system which is inherently insecure , during transaction of message in E-Learning system, hackers attack by utilising different loopholes of technology. So different security measures are required to be imposed on the system. In this paper, emphasis is given on different risks called e-risks and their remedies called e-remedies to build trust in the minds of all participants of E-Learning system.

Background Information for the Campus Network Design ProjectXUMU.docxikirkton
Background Information for the Campus Network Design Project
XUMUC is large online university in the Eastern United States. The university has an enrollment of 90,000 students, mostly online. The students do not live on campus and are scattered around the globe. XUMUC offer courses in the fields of arts and humanities, business, social sciences, mathematics, computer science, the physical sciences, and health sciences. Many of the professors are working professionals with jobs in the business community, and only 5% of the 3000 faculty have offices on main campus. Due to opening of new online universities in the DC metropolitan area, the university has had difficult time attracting new students. The college wishes to attract and retain more students, many of whom leave the state to attend more prestigious colleges. Because of these reasons and others, the State advisory board expanded the Shady Grove campus of XUMUC. Nine states colleges open their branches at Shady Grove location. XUMUC’s management board now wishes to consolidate management functions at its Shady Grove location.
The president of XUMUC formed an Advisory Group whose mission was to consolidate IT functions and implement state of the art network to attract prospective students. The
Advisory Group was also to determine why prospective students do not select XUMUC. The group determined that many prospective students do not select XUMUC because they perceive the computer facilities at XUMUC to be inadequate. In addition to the computer applications used by the students and professors, the college administration personnel use the College Management System, which is a Novell NetWare client/server application that keeps track of class registrations and student records.
The Current Network at Shady Grove Campus:
The Shady Grove campus hosts 9 independent universities working independently. The campus has three main buildings and fiber optic cable is used for backbone connections. The campus diagram is shown below.

Each building is connected by fiber optic cable. Because most of the students that attend XUMUC do so on a part-time basis, and because much of the faculty have other jobs, the assumption in the past has been that many of the students and professors use computing resources at home or at work and do not depend on the XUMUC network. The current network is shown in Figure -1.

The scope of the WIFI project is not limited to a specific realm of the participants in the university. As part of a five-year strategic plan of the IT deanship, the project aims to create a consistent user experience across the various building of University, including the provision of wireless network access. The access to the network on the go can be a really great endeavor for the information exchange and the information fetch at instances when needed. This last issue became critical in the summer of 2014, when the more number of extra access point of the network are needed, which require civil work and extra time to get ready. This was a very typical scenario in which wiring and cabling was a burden and an overhead for the entire vicinity of the employees including the implementation team and the stakeholders. Moreover there are various issues that are known to everyone regarding the cable LAN and its maintenance. We had already traditionally viewed wired as good enough for everybody, however over the past times the scenario is changing and it is becoming a very drastic problem where the more the expansion of the network is done the more are the chances of the faults in the network and the system designs. Thus it becomes a very needful situation where a solution is to be figured out for the networks and its maintenance.

In today's fast-changing business world, Companies that adapt and embrace new ideas often need help to keep up with the competition. However, fostering a culture of innovation takes much work. It takes vision, leadership and willingness to take risks in the right proportion. Sachin Dev Duggal, co-founder of Builder.ai, has perfected the art of this balance, creating a company culture where creativity and growth are nurtured at each stage.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
