1. Summer Assignment – Christopher Nolan
Christopher Jonathan James Nolan was born in 30 July 1970. He is a British film director,
screenwriter, and producer. He created several of the most successful films of the early 21st
century, and his eight films have grossed over $3.5 billion worldwide. Christopher Nolan
gained a considerable amount of attention after he directed memento (2000). This allowed
him to get the opportunity to make a big budget thriller insomnia (2002) and the Prestige
(2006). He found even further popularity and critical success with The Dark Night trilogy
(2005 – 2012) and inception (2010). Now he is currently working on the science fiction film
Interstellar (2014).
Nolan's films are rooted in philosophical and sociological concepts and ideas, exploring
human morality, the construction of time, and the malleable nature of memory and personal
identity. Experimentation with met fictive elements, temporal shifts, elliptical cutting,
solipsistic perspectives, nonlinear storytelling and the analogous relationship between the
visual language and narrative elements, permeate his entire body of work. Nolan is an
Honorary Fellow of University College London, a three-time Academy Award nominee, and
a recipient of numerous career achievement awards, including the BAFTA Britannia Award
for Artistic Excellence in Directing.
One of his most successful films Batman the Dark Night shows how Nolan’s films explore
human morality. There is a very important scene where the joker plants a bomb in two ships.
He gives everyone 15 mins to decide who blows up who, whoever pulls the trigger first gets
to live. However the people of the two ships have no communication with each other. In the
end nobody pulls the trigger to blow the other ship up and save themselves. This surprises the
joker and proves him wrong about the morality of humans. James Nolan was trying to show
that humans are not naturally evil. They are not selfish all the time and there is always good
in people.
Nolan’s movies have an influence on people. It shows people that you should be grateful and
shows the values of how we are and what we have
