Steve McQueen
Of Grenadian descent, McQueen grew up in London, where he began
his career as a video artist, making a string of short films between 1993
and 2007. In 2008 he made his breakthrough feature debut Hunger - the
story of Irish republican Bobby Sands, who died on hunger strike in a
Northern Irish prison in 1981. The film, agonizing and haunting, launched
Michael Fassbender to fame and set the tone for the director’s
uncompromising explorations of history and the intricacies of the human
psyche. The film was closely followed by Shame in 2011, in which
Fassbender plays a man struggling with sexual addiction, and 12 Years
a Slave in 2013, the story of a free man sold into slavery in 19th century
America. 12 Years a Slave won a string of awards, including three
OSCARs (for Best Film, Best Actress and Best Screenplay), a Golden
Globe and two BAFTAs.
 In 1841, African American Solomon
Northup, a free man, is kidnapped and
forced into slavery under the name
'Platt' for 12 years. He faces the
hardships of being a slave under the
hands of a few different slave owners.
Through faith, will power, and
courage Northup must survive and
endure those 12 years as a slave.
BenWheatley
He began his career directing short films and commercials before
gaining a huge online following. In 2009 he shot to recognition with his
first feature film, Down Terrace, which was shot in just eight days for
an alleged £6,000 (approx 135,000 MXN) and went on to win Best
Feature Film at the Raindance Film Festival. In 2010 he was
commissioned by WARP Films, a low-budget, avant-garde UK
production company, to made Kill List - a nightmarish, semi-
improvised thriller about two low-rent assassins. Sightseers (2012)
was a blackly comic road-movie/love story, about a couple on an
accidental killing-spree, while his last feature, 2014’s A Field in
England, defies categorization altogether, lauded by Martin Scorsese
as “a most original and stunning cinematographic experience”.
Scorsese is reportedly executive producing Wheatley’s next
feature Free Fire, set to go into production this year.
Boston, 1978. The leader of an
arms gang is making a sale to a
couple of Irish people. Things get
complicated when a woman
shows up at the abandoned
warehouse where the exchange
is taking place, as a shootout
soon ensues.
Sally El Hosaini
Welsh-born Sally El Hosaini was raised in Cairo by Egyptian
parents, later returning to the UK to study. She worked for
Amnesty International before making two acclaimed short films
– The Fifth Bowl in 2008 and Henna Night in 2009. Her 2012
feature film My Brother the Devil was five years in the making
– it is a deftly eloquent and thoughtful exploration of
masculinity, machismo and sexuality that takes as its backdrop
the mean streets of East London.
Rash is part of a gang in which he sells
drugs. When his friend Izzi (Anthony
Welsh) is killed in a confrontation with a
rival gang, his first impulse is to get
revenge by murdering his boss, but his
first attempt to walk up to him and shoot
him at point-blank range doesn't work.
Duane Hopkins
Born in England, Hopkins made two critically acclaimed short films –
Field (2001) which premiered at the Cannes Critics’ Week and Love Me
Or Leave Me Alone (2003), which won Best Short Film at the Edinburgh
Film Festival that year. His debut feature, Better Things, premiered at the
Cannes Critics’ Week in 2008, where it won the Camera D’Or. With dreamy
cinematography by British cinematographer Lol Crawley, the film is a
nuanced, social-realist examination of a drug-addicted and alienated
British youth, set against a backdrop of bleak British countryside. His latest
feature, Bypass, is the story of a working-class teenager and petty criminal
struggling to make good.
Tim (George MacKay) is a good
guy, he cares about those close
to him, and he knows his
responsibility to them. However,
Tim is a criminal who needs to
make money, and without a job,
he can only sell stolen goods.
Clio Barnard
She is a Yorkshire-born artist and director, whose work plays with
traditional ideas of form and structure – mixing fact and fiction to
create uneasy and profound works of art. Her short films –
including documentary Lambeth Marsh in 2000, Random Acts of
Intimacy in 2002 and Flood in 2003 - have been shown at
festivals and galleries around the world. Her radical feature
debut The Arbor deftly merges fiction and documentary to tell the
story of the troubled upbringing of British teenage playwright
Andrea Dunbar. The film, praised for its experimental approach
and uncompromising vision, won a series of awards, including
Best British Newcomer for its director at the London Film Festival
in 2010. Her follow-up feature, The Selfish Giant (2013), a
contemporary working-class fable set in an unflinchingly working-
class Britain, had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in
2013, where it won the Europa Cinemas Award.
The film centers on two teenagers, Arbor and
Swifty, and their exploitative relationship with
Kitten, the owner of a local junkyard. Arbor and
Swifty got kicked out of school, and on those days
of uncertainty, they both start collecting (and
stealing) copper and scrap metal, which they then
sell to Kitten. In parallel, the film portrays a local
custom: the sulkys, that is, the races of small
horse-drawn carriages that are the subject of bets
among the inhabitants. Swifty has a gift for
horses, and Kitten begins to use it in the races
she bets on. Arbor, increasingly problematic, feels
bad about this relationship of alleged complicity
between his friend and the one he considers to be
his model.
Gareth Edwards
He is a director, screenwriter, cinematographer, production designer and visual
effects artist. His 2010 independent sci-fi feature Monsters, which was made with
a crew of just five people for a tiny budget and using home-made special effects
(overseen by Edwards), was a critical success and a hit worldwide, earning
Edwards the title of Breakthrough British Filmmaker at the London Critics Circle
Film Awards in 2011. Monsters was followed by the (much bigger
budget) Godzilla, which featured cinematography by Seamus McGarvey (The
Avengers, We Need to Talk About Kevin) and music by Alexandre Desplat
(Moonrise Kingdom, The Imitation Game). He is reportedly to be in production for
the first ever standalone Star Wars film, due for release in December 2016, and
for a Godzilla sequel, slated for 2018.
A prehistoric sea monster, which has lain
dormant for decades after humanity tried to
destroy it, faces evil creatures that, animated
by the scientific arrogance of man, threaten
the life of the human race.
Andrea Arnold
Arnold began her career as an actress and television
presenter before studying directing at the AFI
Conservatory in Los Angeles and screenwriting in the
UK. Her third short film, Wasp (2003), about a working-
class mother with four young children, won her an
Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film and the coveted
title of Screen International Star of Tomorrow. Her first
two feature films, Red Road (2006) and Fish
Tank (2009) both won Jury Prizes at Cannes that year.
In 2011 she filmed an adaptation of Emily
Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, which premiered at the
Venice Film Festival. She is renowned for her
unflinching yet poetic visions of British working-class
life (all of her feature films have been shot by British
cinematographer Robbie Ryan) and for using non-
actors in key roles.
Based on the only novel by Emily
Brontë. Grim story about frustrated
love, rivalry between brothers and
revenge. A squire from the desolate
Yorkshire moors, while visiting
Liverpool, comes across a destitute boy
named Heathcliff on the street and
decides to adopt him and take him to
his mansion. An obsessive love affair
soon develops between Heathcliff and
Catherine, the daughter of his protector.
Lynne Ramsay
Described by Los Angeles Times writer Mark Olsen as “one of the leading lights of
young British cinema”, she is a Scottish writer, director, producer and
cinematographer. Ramsay began her career with a series of acclaimed short films,
including Small Deaths in 1996 and Gasman in 1998, both of which won Jury Prizes
at Cannes, and Kill the Day (2000), which won a Jury Prize at Clermont-Ferrand.
She has made three feature films: Ratcatcher (1999), Morvern Caller (2002) and
most recently We Need to Talk About Kevin in 2011, which starred Tilda Swinton
and John C Reilly. An uncompromising director, her films are immersive and
strange, relying on powerful imagery, texture and sound to create unique narrative
worlds.
Eva, a self-satisfied woman, is an author
and editor of travel guides. Married for
years to Franklin, a photographer who
works in advertising, she decides, almost
forty years old and after many doubts, to
have a child. This is how Kevin will be born.
But, from the very beginning, difficulties
begin to arise... Adaptation of the
homonymous novel by Lionel Shriver
Richard Ayoade
Born in London to a Nigerian father and a Norwegian mother, he is a writer, comedian,
actor and TV presenter best known in the UK for his roles in Garth Merenghi’s
Darkplace and The IT Crowd, often also working alongside Noel Fielding and Julian
Barratt in The Mighty Boosh. He has directed music videos for a number of well-known
bands and in 2010 made his breakthrough feature Submarine, an offbeat coming-of-
age comedy about a teenage boy who falls in love with a young pyromaniac. The
film’s quirkiness and its idiosyncratic treatment of young love (it has been likened to
the work of both Wes Anderson and Michel Gondry) won Ayoade a series of awards
and a nomination for Breakthrough British Filmmaker in 2012.
Contemporary adaptation of
Dostoevsky's novel about a
bureaucrat who begins to
lose his mind when an exact
double of him appears
working in the same office
and seems to have the
intention of supplanting him.
Amma Asante
Born in London to Ghanaian parents, she is a screenwriter and director who worked as an
actress on a number of well-known British TV series before making her first feature film, A
Way of Life, in 2004. The story of a young mother struggling to provide for her infant
daughter in squalid conditions won Asante numerous awards, including the BAFTA for Most
Promising Newcomer in 2005 and the UK Film Talent Award at the London Film Festival in
2004. Her most recent feature, Belle, is the masterfully crafted (and true) story of an
illegitimate mulatto girl raised by an aristocratic family. The film launched its lead actress,
Gugu Mbatha-Raw, to stardom – she won a British Independent Film Award for Best Actress,
the Chicago Film Festival’s Emerging Artist Award, and was nominated for the BAFTA Rising
Star Award, all in 2014. Asante is currently in production for her third feature, Unforgettable,
with Warner Brothers, and will soon start work on her fourth – Where Hands Touch, to be
financed by Pinewood Studios.
Film based on real events. Mixed-race
Dido Elizebeth Belle (Mbatha-Raw), the
illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy
Admiral (Matthew Goode), is raised by
her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom
Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson).
Although his lineage allows him to enjoy
certain privileges, his presence is
controversial, since slavery is still in force
in England.

  • 4. Steve McQueen Of Grenadian descent, McQueen grew up in London, where he began his career as a video artist, making a string of short films between 1993 and 2007. In 2008 he made his breakthrough feature debut Hunger - the story of Irish republican Bobby Sands, who died on hunger strike in a Northern Irish prison in 1981. The film, agonizing and haunting, launched Michael Fassbender to fame and set the tone for the director’s uncompromising explorations of history and the intricacies of the human psyche. The film was closely followed by Shame in 2011, in which Fassbender plays a man struggling with sexual addiction, and 12 Years a Slave in 2013, the story of a free man sold into slavery in 19th century America. 12 Years a Slave won a string of awards, including three OSCARs (for Best Film, Best Actress and Best Screenplay), a Golden Globe and two BAFTAs.
  • 5.  In 1841, African American Solomon Northup, a free man, is kidnapped and forced into slavery under the name 'Platt' for 12 years. He faces the hardships of being a slave under the hands of a few different slave owners. Through faith, will power, and courage Northup must survive and endure those 12 years as a slave.
  • 6. BenWheatley He began his career directing short films and commercials before gaining a huge online following. In 2009 he shot to recognition with his first feature film, Down Terrace, which was shot in just eight days for an alleged £6,000 (approx 135,000 MXN) and went on to win Best Feature Film at the Raindance Film Festival. In 2010 he was commissioned by WARP Films, a low-budget, avant-garde UK production company, to made Kill List - a nightmarish, semi- improvised thriller about two low-rent assassins. Sightseers (2012) was a blackly comic road-movie/love story, about a couple on an accidental killing-spree, while his last feature, 2014’s A Field in England, defies categorization altogether, lauded by Martin Scorsese as “a most original and stunning cinematographic experience”. Scorsese is reportedly executive producing Wheatley’s next feature Free Fire, set to go into production this year.
  • 7. Boston, 1978. The leader of an arms gang is making a sale to a couple of Irish people. Things get complicated when a woman shows up at the abandoned warehouse where the exchange is taking place, as a shootout soon ensues.
  • 8. Sally El Hosaini Welsh-born Sally El Hosaini was raised in Cairo by Egyptian parents, later returning to the UK to study. She worked for Amnesty International before making two acclaimed short films – The Fifth Bowl in 2008 and Henna Night in 2009. Her 2012 feature film My Brother the Devil was five years in the making – it is a deftly eloquent and thoughtful exploration of masculinity, machismo and sexuality that takes as its backdrop the mean streets of East London.
  • 9. Rash is part of a gang in which he sells drugs. When his friend Izzi (Anthony Welsh) is killed in a confrontation with a rival gang, his first impulse is to get revenge by murdering his boss, but his first attempt to walk up to him and shoot him at point-blank range doesn't work.
  • 10. Duane Hopkins Born in England, Hopkins made two critically acclaimed short films – Field (2001) which premiered at the Cannes Critics’ Week and Love Me Or Leave Me Alone (2003), which won Best Short Film at the Edinburgh Film Festival that year. His debut feature, Better Things, premiered at the Cannes Critics’ Week in 2008, where it won the Camera D’Or. With dreamy cinematography by British cinematographer Lol Crawley, the film is a nuanced, social-realist examination of a drug-addicted and alienated British youth, set against a backdrop of bleak British countryside. His latest feature, Bypass, is the story of a working-class teenager and petty criminal struggling to make good.
  • 11. Tim (George MacKay) is a good guy, he cares about those close to him, and he knows his responsibility to them. However, Tim is a criminal who needs to make money, and without a job, he can only sell stolen goods.
  • 12. Clio Barnard She is a Yorkshire-born artist and director, whose work plays with traditional ideas of form and structure – mixing fact and fiction to create uneasy and profound works of art. Her short films – including documentary Lambeth Marsh in 2000, Random Acts of Intimacy in 2002 and Flood in 2003 - have been shown at festivals and galleries around the world. Her radical feature debut The Arbor deftly merges fiction and documentary to tell the story of the troubled upbringing of British teenage playwright Andrea Dunbar. The film, praised for its experimental approach and uncompromising vision, won a series of awards, including Best British Newcomer for its director at the London Film Festival in 2010. Her follow-up feature, The Selfish Giant (2013), a contemporary working-class fable set in an unflinchingly working- class Britain, had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, where it won the Europa Cinemas Award.
  • 13. The film centers on two teenagers, Arbor and Swifty, and their exploitative relationship with Kitten, the owner of a local junkyard. Arbor and Swifty got kicked out of school, and on those days of uncertainty, they both start collecting (and stealing) copper and scrap metal, which they then sell to Kitten. In parallel, the film portrays a local custom: the sulkys, that is, the races of small horse-drawn carriages that are the subject of bets among the inhabitants. Swifty has a gift for horses, and Kitten begins to use it in the races she bets on. Arbor, increasingly problematic, feels bad about this relationship of alleged complicity between his friend and the one he considers to be his model.
  • 14. Gareth Edwards He is a director, screenwriter, cinematographer, production designer and visual effects artist. His 2010 independent sci-fi feature Monsters, which was made with a crew of just five people for a tiny budget and using home-made special effects (overseen by Edwards), was a critical success and a hit worldwide, earning Edwards the title of Breakthrough British Filmmaker at the London Critics Circle Film Awards in 2011. Monsters was followed by the (much bigger budget) Godzilla, which featured cinematography by Seamus McGarvey (The Avengers, We Need to Talk About Kevin) and music by Alexandre Desplat (Moonrise Kingdom, The Imitation Game). He is reportedly to be in production for the first ever standalone Star Wars film, due for release in December 2016, and for a Godzilla sequel, slated for 2018.
  • 15. A prehistoric sea monster, which has lain dormant for decades after humanity tried to destroy it, faces evil creatures that, animated by the scientific arrogance of man, threaten the life of the human race.
  • 16. Andrea Arnold Arnold began her career as an actress and television presenter before studying directing at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles and screenwriting in the UK. Her third short film, Wasp (2003), about a working- class mother with four young children, won her an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film and the coveted title of Screen International Star of Tomorrow. Her first two feature films, Red Road (2006) and Fish Tank (2009) both won Jury Prizes at Cannes that year. In 2011 she filmed an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. She is renowned for her unflinching yet poetic visions of British working-class life (all of her feature films have been shot by British cinematographer Robbie Ryan) and for using non- actors in key roles.
  • 17. Based on the only novel by Emily Brontë. Grim story about frustrated love, rivalry between brothers and revenge. A squire from the desolate Yorkshire moors, while visiting Liverpool, comes across a destitute boy named Heathcliff on the street and decides to adopt him and take him to his mansion. An obsessive love affair soon develops between Heathcliff and Catherine, the daughter of his protector.
  • 18. Lynne Ramsay Described by Los Angeles Times writer Mark Olsen as “one of the leading lights of young British cinema”, she is a Scottish writer, director, producer and cinematographer. Ramsay began her career with a series of acclaimed short films, including Small Deaths in 1996 and Gasman in 1998, both of which won Jury Prizes at Cannes, and Kill the Day (2000), which won a Jury Prize at Clermont-Ferrand. She has made three feature films: Ratcatcher (1999), Morvern Caller (2002) and most recently We Need to Talk About Kevin in 2011, which starred Tilda Swinton and John C Reilly. An uncompromising director, her films are immersive and strange, relying on powerful imagery, texture and sound to create unique narrative worlds.
  • 19. Eva, a self-satisfied woman, is an author and editor of travel guides. Married for years to Franklin, a photographer who works in advertising, she decides, almost forty years old and after many doubts, to have a child. This is how Kevin will be born. But, from the very beginning, difficulties begin to arise... Adaptation of the homonymous novel by Lionel Shriver
  • 20. Richard Ayoade Born in London to a Nigerian father and a Norwegian mother, he is a writer, comedian, actor and TV presenter best known in the UK for his roles in Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and The IT Crowd, often also working alongside Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt in The Mighty Boosh. He has directed music videos for a number of well-known bands and in 2010 made his breakthrough feature Submarine, an offbeat coming-of- age comedy about a teenage boy who falls in love with a young pyromaniac. The film’s quirkiness and its idiosyncratic treatment of young love (it has been likened to the work of both Wes Anderson and Michel Gondry) won Ayoade a series of awards and a nomination for Breakthrough British Filmmaker in 2012.
  • 21. Contemporary adaptation of Dostoevsky's novel about a bureaucrat who begins to lose his mind when an exact double of him appears working in the same office and seems to have the intention of supplanting him.
  • 22. Amma Asante Born in London to Ghanaian parents, she is a screenwriter and director who worked as an actress on a number of well-known British TV series before making her first feature film, A Way of Life, in 2004. The story of a young mother struggling to provide for her infant daughter in squalid conditions won Asante numerous awards, including the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer in 2005 and the UK Film Talent Award at the London Film Festival in 2004. Her most recent feature, Belle, is the masterfully crafted (and true) story of an illegitimate mulatto girl raised by an aristocratic family. The film launched its lead actress, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, to stardom – she won a British Independent Film Award for Best Actress, the Chicago Film Festival’s Emerging Artist Award, and was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award, all in 2014. Asante is currently in production for her third feature, Unforgettable, with Warner Brothers, and will soon start work on her fourth – Where Hands Touch, to be financed by Pinewood Studios.
  • 23. Film based on real events. Mixed-race Dido Elizebeth Belle (Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral (Matthew Goode), is raised by her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). Although his lineage allows him to enjoy certain privileges, his presence is controversial, since slavery is still in force in England.
