Solid waste management is a major problem for towns and cities as it is an expensive undertaking and uses valuable land. Open waste dumps create public health issues and depress surrounding land values. They have also become places where poor children search for food. Plastic bags are a major component of municipal solid waste. Some solutions to solid waste management include burning combustible waste in incineration plants to generate energy, though this produces dangerous dioxins. Biodegradable waste can be converted into manure for agriculture. Reusing and recycling materials reduces waste and saves money.
