Katie Steen is a Higher Education Fellow at U.S. PIRG who advocates for more affordable higher education through open textbooks and open educational resources (OER). She got her start in advocacy through involvement with student government and graduate student associations at the University of Missouri. She has pushed for open education policies and platforms at both the campus and national level, meeting with stakeholders like librarians, faculty, administrators, and members of Congress. Today she continues her advocacy through U.S. PIRG's student chapters and campaigns to educate about OER and build coalitions of open education supporters.

Collaborating with Students on OER Advocacy
For many student leaders, finding ways to make a post-secondary degree more affordable is a top priority. While student leaders may have heard about the benefits of OER, many may not be aware of the tactics needed to actually transition their efforts into increased awareness and adoption. Further many librarians, teaching and learning support staff and faculty members working to advance OER on campus have not yet collaborated with students. In recognition of this, this workshop will provide attendees with an overview of grassroots tactics, highlighting the benefits of involving students in OER advocacy. Through highlighting successful collaborative OER campaigns, this session will provide attendees with the opportunity to connect, learn from one another and commit to further action that can be taken on their campuses through grassroots organizing.

In 2016 it engaged over 4,000 visitors and led to achievements like a new minor in environmental studies and a vegan cafeteria. It is organized democratically and sustainably by students with support from university departments and the Swiss Student Union.

Open education takes the spirit of sharing, creativity, and transparency and leverages those with the flattening capabilities of the Internet, the portability of mobile computing, and the wider freedoms of flexible copyright to improve accessibility, enrich content, and foster creative collaboration. Intro to Open Pedagogy: For STUDENTS
1) The document introduces open educational resources (OER) which are teaching, learning, and research materials that can be freely used and modified. OER include full courses, textbooks, videos, and other education tools and materials.
2) It notes that college textbook costs have increased dramatically, rising over 800% since 1978 and 3.2 times the rate of inflation. Using OER can help reduce costs for students.

What do Textbooks cost? An Open Question
Rising textbook costs have been highlighted as an issue for students’ higher education, particularly in North America. Less is known about the costs and forms in which books are available to students in higher education in Europe and specifically in Ireland. This is despite significant moves towards openly licensed digital books as a potential response via established open access publishing platforms. This research sought to address a gap in the scholarly understating of textbook usage and the potential pf open alternatives. We present the results of an analysis of the accessibility, cost and licensing of textbooks in Ireland taking one higher education institution as a case study. We report here on the findings of phase one of this study including the retail prices of over 500 books, the formats they are available in and those that may be in the public domain. The next phase of this study involved the design of two research instruments to use with staff and students as participants in a research study. These instruments were designed, with reference to the research literature on OER, to examine the current usage and perception of educational textbooks with the overarching aim of determining the relevance of digital open textbook platforms in the Irish context.

A CNU student proposes opening a 24-hour convenience store on campus to improve student safety and convenience. Currently, the closest 24-hour shops are across a busy street, requiring students to cross if they need a late night snack. With Newport News ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in Virginia, parents would feel safer knowing students did not have to leave campus. A convenience store would benefit students by providing easy access to food outside of dining hall hours. The student plans to conduct a survey to determine student and parent support for the store, which could be student-run to provide jobs, and profit the university over the long term.
Enhancing and hindering factors in effective WASH in Schools, Nakuru Kenya

The Schools@University program is a one-week program at Freie Universität Berlin that educates 2,400 students per year on sustainability and climate protection issues through 70 interactive workshops. The program aims to increase students' and teachers' knowledge and awareness of sustainability topics and empower them to make sustainable changes. Students participate in experiments on renewable energy, field trips to ecological sites, and creative arts activities. The program also provides teacher training to help implement sustainability education in schools. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a model education for sustainable development program.

Bridging the Gap: Mixing approaches, content and tools to help college students
The Next Generation Learning Challenge has provided a call to action for those involved in Open Educational Resources to meet the needs of the US education system. One of the challenges is to deploy open core courseware to address the retention and completion issues in community colleges. In the Open Learning: Bridge to Success (B2S) initiative The Open University working in partnership with MIT, Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and University of Maryland University College (UMUC) will develop open bridging modules to help learners having problems in coping with credit bearing courses. Modules focussed on learning to learn and understanding mathematics will be released as complete open educational resource packages from The Open University's existing successful programme of entry-level (pre-degree) "Openings" modules. The Open University has an established open presence through its OpenLearn open content site which offers a wide range of units, and the courses will be developed in the open to benefit not only students in the partner institutions but any learners who wish to use them.
The project will run its first pilots with Community College students from September and this presentation focuses on the early phase of the project including: release of the initial materials, augmentation with other OER, design of the research methodology and early lessons from working together as partners. Already working in the open is changing how we think about the provision of content and the instruction of practical experiences alongside meeting curriculum needs. We anticipate presenting the design requirements and how they have been met through open provision, reflections from those involved in the projects, the first feedback from students at the pilot colleges, and the indications from the additional users in the open.
The Connected Learning Initiative Quality at Scale in India

Bridging the Gap: Mixing approaches, content and tools to help college students
The Next Generation Learning Challenge has provided a call to action for those involved in Open Educational Resources to meet the needs of the US education system. One of the challenges is to deploy open core courseware to address the retention and completion issues in community colleges. In the Open Learning: Bridge to Success (B2S) initiative The Open University working in partnership with MIT, Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and University of Maryland University College (UMUC) will develop open bridging modules to help learners having problems in coping with credit bearing courses. Modules focussed on learning to learn and understanding mathematics will be released as complete open educational resource packages from The Open University's existing successful programme of entry-level (pre-degree) "Openings" modules. The Open University has an established open presence through its OpenLearn open content site which offers a wide range of units, and the courses will be developed in the open to benefit not only students in the partner institutions but any learners who wish to use them.
The project will run its first pilots with Community College students from September and this presentation focuses on the early phase of the project including: release of the initial materials, augmentation with other OER, design of the research methodology and early lessons from working together as partners. Already working in the open is changing how we think about the provision of content and the instruction of practical experiences alongside meeting curriculum needs. We anticipate presenting the design requirements and how they have been met through open provision, reflections from those involved in the projects, the first feedback from students at the pilot colleges, and the indications from the additional users in the open.

A fabricação do Bandeirante no Brasil foi nacionalizada a partir de maio de 1962[1]. A produção só se encerrou em novembro de 2001[2]. Nesse período, o mais longo que um mesmo modelo de automóvel já teve de produção no Brasil, foram montadas 103.750 unidades, que sobem para 104.621 se somados os Land Cruisers montados em CKD.[1][3]
É conhecido pela sua robustez e capacidade de se deslocar em terrenos desfavoráveis aos automóveis de passeio.[1]. De 1958 a 1962, foi equipado com o motor 2F da Toyota, um 4.0 de baixa rotação a gasolina, com 6 cilindros e que desenvolvia 110 cv a 2000 rpm. Logo se viu, porém, que a gula por gasolina desse motor diminuía o alcance do veículo excessivamente, tornando-o inviável para o interior brasileiro daqueles anos. Assim, com a nacionalização da fabricação em 1962, o modelo foi renomeado Toyota Bandeirante e equipado com o motor OM-324 (algumas fontes afirmam o motor ter sido um OM-326) da Mercedes-Benz, um 3.4 a diesel com quatro cilindros que desenvolvia 78 cv a 3000 rpm e que rendeu o apelido de "Britadeira" ao veículo. Em 1973, o OM-324 foi seguido pelo OM-314, também da Mercedes-Benz. O OM-314 é um 3.8 de quatro cilindros a diesel que desenvolve 85 cv a 2.800 rpm. Esse motor ficaria até 1990, ano em que foi substituído por outro motor Mercedes-Benz, o OM-364. O OM-364 é um 4.0 a diesel, cuja potência é de 90 cv a 2800 rpm. Foi por causa dos motores OM (Öl Motor) da Mercedes-Benz que a linha Bandeirante de 1962 a 1994 seria chamada de série OJ5. O ano de 1994 marcaria o fim dos motores da Mercedes-Benz: nesse ano, o Bandeirante passou a ser equipado com o propulsor Toyota 14B, um 3.7 com quatro cilindros, sempre a diesel, que chega a 96 cv a 3.400 rpm.

Affordable Learning Pennsylvania, a grant-funded project lead by the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc. (PALCI), is now entering its second year of supporting the creation of a robust OER community among higher education campuses throughout Pennsylvania and the region for the active development and use of open textbooks and related educational resources.
The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) OER Policy and Implementation Summit in the fall of 2018 launched a regional effort to help Midwestern states to scale and expand their OER projects. Leadership teams from the 12 states are working with MHEC to develop and coordinate on action plans.

The presentation explored the intersection of student focused social justice interests, civic engagement goals, and community partnership opportunities. The underlying premise was that when students connect with community issues that they are passionately interested in they become more deeply involved with learning objectives and have the opportunity to learn from experts in social justice issues. The end result is an opportunity to immerse students in opportunities to become catalysts and leaders of social transformation. This presentation focused on a student learning and advocacy program at the Thomas Merton Center, located in Pittsburgh, PA. The program engaged over 100 student interns from universities and community colleges located across the country. Students connected with the center as a result of their involvement in their colleges’ service learning and civic engagement programs. Students learned leadership skills that could be applied in their ongoing peace and justice activism. At the workshop, attendees learned how to implement the center’s strategies, while combining student learning outcomes with civic work in the community. Emphasis was placed on creating a values- based framework that links student learning with student passion which manifested in diverse civic engagement opportunities.

The Teagle Foundation funded research related to assessment and student learning outcomes from 2004-2012 through its Outcomes and Assessment Program. This research involved nearly 70 schools and 10 educational organizations in a variety of collaborative projects. Key areas explored included using assessment to improve teaching and learning, developing faculty understanding of assessment, evaluating assessment tools, and strengthening liberal education through assessment. The research produced theoretical, practical and campus-based changes and generated a significant body of knowledge around assessment and student learning.

Guillermina's presentation introduced the regional landscape of science and technology (S&T) communication, focusing on the alternatives that have been built in the last decades to increase local knowledge production’s visibility through regional indexing systems and gold open access (SciELO and RedALyC). The high-level authorities’ efforts for promoting green open access policies and building its infrastructures will also be addressed by presenting the regional initiative established in 2012, LAReferencia, which is a federated network of nine countries that aims at establishing agreements and providing guidelines for the creation of repositories to provide open access to publicly funded research, addressing S&T production as a public good.

Aliya shared the successes and challenges of integrating openness in the Kyrgyz context through the implementation of Kyrgyz Mountains Environmental Education and Citizen Science project (KMEECS) and subsequent projects. KMEECS project applies a transdisciplinary approach to knowledge generation. It combines citizen science on the community level, environmental research and teacher training to foster awareness of and interaction with the local environment. At the same time it aims at generating locally relevant data on the environment in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. The project pilots the introduction of low-cost environmental field courses on water monitoring in schools in mountain communities of Kyrgyzstan’s Naryn province. Based on a citizen science approach, students analyse and generate data on their water resources, which are fed into a network of open environmental data.

The project “Assessing Current Practices in Review, Promotion and Tenure (RPT) Across the United States and Canada” departs from the belief that the adoption of open access and other open science principles among academics would be more widespread if ‘being open’ was explicitly rewarded in career progression of university professors. In the case of Canadian and American institutions of higher education, career progression generally takes the form of reviews of faculty’s work, promotions, and the achievement of tenure—a permanent, lifetime, position at an institution that cannot be terminated, except under crucial circumstances. The importance placed on the RPT process by all faculty suggests that changes in the policy documents and guidelines that inform these practices may provide the impetus for behavioral change, leading to broader interest and adoption of open access values. In the context of a broad and ongoing project, this presentation will focus in some of the results of the content analysis of 864 RPT guidelines and forms of 129 institutions across the US and Canada. These finding will hopefully provide baseline knowledge for thinking in actualized ways of effecting change towards a greater opening of research in North American universities.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
