Integrating Library Resources into the Course Development Process at an Online College

Electronic resources and librarians services must reach out to a broad spectrum of populations in academic settings. In an effort to promote use of library resources and services, the librarians for Excelsior College have produced a way of increasing usage of both the services and resources through course integration. This model of systematically integrating library services and resources into online courses will be addressed in this presentation. The presentation will demonstrate how to collaborate with course developers and instructional designers at the point where the course is being designed. Examples of how librarians can initiate partnerships within the academic institution; manage the workflow of requested projects; manage expectations; and ultimately market services will be discussed.

Bridging the Gap: Mixing approaches, content and tools to help college students
The Next Generation Learning Challenge has provided a call to action for those involved in Open Educational Resources to meet the needs of the US education system. One of the challenges is to deploy open core courseware to address the retention and completion issues in community colleges. In the Open Learning: Bridge to Success (B2S) initiative The Open University working in partnership with MIT, Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and University of Maryland University College (UMUC) will develop open bridging modules to help learners having problems in coping with credit bearing courses. Modules focussed on learning to learn and understanding mathematics will be released as complete open educational resource packages from The Open University's existing successful programme of entry-level (pre-degree) "Openings" modules. The Open University has an established open presence through its OpenLearn open content site which offers a wide range of units, and the courses will be developed in the open to benefit not only students in the partner institutions but any learners who wish to use them.
The project will run its first pilots with Community College students from September and this presentation focuses on the early phase of the project including: release of the initial materials, augmentation with other OER, design of the research methodology and early lessons from working together as partners. Already working in the open is changing how we think about the provision of content and the instruction of practical experiences alongside meeting curriculum needs. We anticipate presenting the design requirements and how they have been met through open provision, reflections from those involved in the projects, the first feedback from students at the pilot colleges, and the indications from the additional users in the open.

University of Southampton MOOC Review
Over the past 2.5 years, the University of Southampton has offered 12 MOOCs through the FutureLearn platform covering topics like archaeology, marketing, and language learning. These MOOCs have attracted over 447,000 participants and nearly 205,000 learners. The MOOCs are developed and facilitated through collaboration between academics, learning designers, media production staff, and PhD student facilitators. Several of the MOOCs have partnered with external organizations like the British Council to expand their reach.
Integrating MOOCs into the Curriculum
The document discusses two attempts at integrating MOOCs into on-campus courses at the University of Southampton. In the first attempt, called the Power of Social Media MOOC, students posted videos and received feedback from MOOC learners, but results were mixed. In the second, called the Digital Marketing MOOC, students were asked to actively participate in the MOOC platform and write blog posts reflecting on their experience. Feedback indicated that while some interactions were useful, many students struggled without prior MOOC experience or digital literacy skills and more support is needed to prepare students for this type of learning experience.

Today she continues her advocacy through U.S. PIRG's student chapters and campaigns to educate about OER and build coalitions of open education supporters.

1. John arrived in Ireland from the Democratic Republic of Congo at age 16 seeking asylum after his father arranged his journey to escape political persecution. Telling John's full story presents challenges given his reluctance to discuss what happened to his family.
2. Reporting on asylum seekers is difficult due to the politicized debate around immigration control and numbers. Slow journalism exploring individual experiences faces issues, but offers possibilities that reactive speed journalism does not.
3. The author has experience interviewing asylum seekers as a journalist and advocate, encountering tensions between legal and media approaches. Credibility determinations pose ethical challenges for journalists interviewing asylum seekers undergoing legal assessment.
