• mostly teenagers and young adults between 15
and 25 years old
• don't impose their beliefs on others
• Belief in Gaia, Greens movement, shamanism
• Strongly hold on to Peace, Love and Freedom

• Believe peace as a way to resolve differences
among peoples, ideologies and religions
• The way to peace is through love and tolerance
• The Vietnam War
– Organize political action group to oppose war
– Demonstration
– Refusal to serve in military

• Means accepting others as they are
• Giving them freedom to express themselves
• Not judging them based on appearances
6. Freedom
• Is the paramount virtue in this system
• Erected signposts for all to see the road to
freedom
• Freedom to do anything, go where ever and to
be open to new experiences
• Believe that it allows maximum personal
growth
Less freedom to pursue our own agenda – the
rest of the time we are slaves to the system

Men

Bali and Java
• Also, Peasant dresses, long
skirts and layering

women’s sexual freedom
• Stopped shaving their legs
and underarms (gasp!)

12. Society’s Impression Toward Them
• Had a great impact throughout the country
• Idea of men with long hair is absurd (society takes it as a
sign of homosexuality )
• Gain respect in the eye of the public as the champion of the
poor
• The controversial messages of the hippies and their socially
unacceptable lifestyle made them targets of very much
negative publicity.
• They were all portrayed as drug pushers, prostitutes, and
thieves by the media.
• The belief that their subversive ideas could destroy society’s
structure and values caused people to fear them.
