FASHION ERA 1960S
PRESENTATION BY :
SUMAIRA FATIMA
INTRODUCTION :
 1960s fashion was bi-polar in just about every way. The early sixties were more
reminiscent of the 1950s—conservative and restrained, certainly more classic in style
and design.
 1960s were the exact opposite.Bright, swirling colors. Psychedelic, tie-dye shirts and
long hair and beards were common place. Woman wore unbelievably short skirts and
men wore tunics and capes.
 Its almost like the 1950s bottled everyone up so much that the late 1960s exploded like
an old pressure cooker. Women were showing more skin than ever before.
 Although the 1960s are best known as a decade of experimentation, it didn’t start out
that way in the fashion world.
 The typical daytime look consisted of a bulbous hat over a high bouffant coiffure,
silhouette with deep armholes and wide sleeves and a rounded jacket look was
in.Longwaisted dresses, often with an over blouse, replaced the fitted waistline and full
skirt.
 Contemporary architecture and sculpture were the most prevalent inspiration for fashion
designers in 1960s.
 Cullottes, divided skirts and trim trouser skirts were introduced for travel, street wear and
evenings at home.
 Skirts got a little bit shorter in 1960.While worn with low-heeled shoes it places more
attention on the legs.
 Plaids of all sizes and colors were heavily favored. Abstract and expressionist art were big
influences on printed silk designs.
 Deep dark colors were the rage in 1960s.They especially covered the spectrum between
purple, red and green.
CELEBRITIES (FASHION ICON ) OF 1960S
 Jean Shrimpton :Dubbed the world's first supermodel, The most famous face of the 1960s. She also appeared
in various magazine covers like Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Newsweek, and Glamour. Jean Shrimpton is
not just any 1960s fashion icon but is regarded as one of the pioneering supermodel of the world.
 Jacqueline Kennedy :The former First Lady Jacky Kennedy, having been the wife of the 35th US President,
John F. Kennedy, is an epitome of beauty and elegance. Her greatest contribution to the fashion in the 1960s
is the pillbox hat. Jacky is also noted for her trendy close waist dresses fancied by young ladies then and
now.

has long been discovered, bikini’s worn and modeled by Brigitte looked more appealing. Her bikinis are in
sunny and vibrant colors, making them sexier and trendy.

trademark “psychedelic look” - electric colors, bold geometric prints, and
'clean' racy cuts.

pant suit.
MAKEUP :
 The 1950s look continued into the 1960s – the elegant eyes, pale pink hues
and loads of powder.
 Eyes were a main focus and once the film Cleopatra was released showing
Elizabeth Taylor with very emphasized eyes everyone learnt to apply
eyeliner with false eyelashes taking on a whole new popularity.
 Eyes: Eyeliner was the most important makeup tool.
 Eyeshadow: popular palette was white for day time and blue grey greens for
evenings.
 Eyelashes: placed on both top and bottom for a real retro ‘flapper’ effect.
 Powder: Lots of powder in the early 1960s to just a dab of translucent by
the end of the decade.
 Lips: were pale to help emphasize eyes.
 Just a few years later, pale lid with a dark eye shadow crease came in with
soft blusher and lipsticks ranging from soft reds to corals and pinks.
 Max factor, Yardley and Mary Quant were some of the very famous
makeup brands.
HAIRSTYLES
 Contrary to what you may believe, the 1960s hair style was just that – styled.
Whether “long, straight, curly, fuzzy” a great deal of attention was paid to
getting just the right look.
 1960's Beehive Hairstyle: In the 1960′s big hair ruled The beehive hairdo
exploded into fame during the 60′s and has since become a recognizable icon of
the decade. The higher you could get your beehive, the better.
 60's Voluminous Hair With Scarf: To show extra personality with a classic 60's
teased crown, long scarves would be tied around the head like a band and the
ends would be left free to flow behind them.
 Teased 60's Hairstyles For Long Hair: This teased hairstyle was very trendy in
the 1960's. It's characterized by lots of volume concentrated at the crown. The
ends of the hair are flipped out and a headband is used to push all of the hair
back from the scalp.
 Monroe 1960's Hair Style: Would a series on Hairstyles from the 60′s be
complete without Marilyn Monroe? We think not. By the 60′s she was an
absolute style icon and her platinum blonde voluminous bob was being strived
towards all over the United States.
Accessories:
 Sunglasses for women to wear during daily activity became popular during the 60s.
 From the “cat eye” to the “big eye”, girls were protecting their eyes from the sun in an array of
unique styles.
 Hats were small on the head but designed with a great detail of flowers, lace and luxurious
embellishments and trims.
 Pins and broaches, bangle bracelets and oversize clip-on or screw on earrings were all range of
accessories.
 Pearls were also popular, white long chains of bright beads, dangle earrings and peace sign
necklaces were worn by hippie chicks.
 The chunky square heel was in style. No stiletto heels now! Girls also wore masculine oxfords
and loafers or ballet flats for casual looks.
 Handbags , purses and clutches were also very popular in funky colors .
HATS
 Jackie Kennedy introduced the pillbox hat in 1960’s.
 Floppy hats were famous in this era, wide brimmed, decorated with large
plumes and flowers, ribbons, and were very feminine.
 Floppy hat became the symbol of bohemian hippy culture.
 Cocktail hats were also very popular.
 Hats were being fashioned to set off the hairstyles.
 In the 1960’s the bucket hat was adapted as a ladies fashion item. Bucket
hat is a headwear design with a wide and downwards sloping brim.
 In this decade men’s hats were full of colors, patterns, and style. Most new
men’s hat styles today are the replicas of 1960’s men’s hats.
Shoes
 1960’s shoes style reflected the change in fashion instead of high heels. Shoes
were now flat and some of them had small square heels but very comfortable and
easy to live life in.
 Shoes embraced the cute design of a low heel, Mary Jane as part of the baby doll
look.
 Big buckles, bows, two tone and color block designs made the 1960’s unique.
 Flats were all in the bright mod colors like baby pink, lime green, mustard yellow
and sky blue.
 The flat sole GOGO boot became an iconic shoe of this decade.
 Shoes were also cheaper because new inventions in types of plastic made making
shoes inexpensive.
 The t-strap shoes also returned in the 1960,s (it actually never left the fashion) as
we saw them in the 1920,s.
 Pilgrim pumps were introduced in 1960,s ,it was the most copied shoe designs of
the entire decade.

1960 s fashion

  • 1. FASHION ERA 1960S PRESENTATION BY : SUMAIRA FATIMA
  • 2. INTRODUCTION :  1960s fashion was bi-polar in just about every way. The early sixties were more reminiscent of the 1950s—conservative and restrained, certainly more classic in style and design.  1960s were the exact opposite.Bright, swirling colors. Psychedelic, tie-dye shirts and long hair and beards were common place. Woman wore unbelievably short skirts and men wore tunics and capes.  Its almost like the 1950s bottled everyone up so much that the late 1960s exploded like an old pressure cooker. Women were showing more skin than ever before.  Although the 1960s are best known as a decade of experimentation, it didn’t start out that way in the fashion world.  The typical daytime look consisted of a bulbous hat over a high bouffant coiffure, silhouette with deep armholes and wide sleeves and a rounded jacket look was in.Longwaisted dresses, often with an over blouse, replaced the fitted waistline and full skirt.
  • 3.  Contemporary architecture and sculpture were the most prevalent inspiration for fashion designers in 1960s.  Cullottes, divided skirts and trim trouser skirts were introduced for travel, street wear and evenings at home.  Skirts got a little bit shorter in 1960.While worn with low-heeled shoes it places more attention on the legs.  Plaids of all sizes and colors were heavily favored.
