Fostering interaction and engagement continues to be a primary concern in the digital classroom. This session explores two models of leveraging pedagogical support staff to improve course design as well as student retention, engagement, and performance. First, initially established at CU Boulder for talented students interested in STEM education, the Learning Assistant model hires undergraduates to assist faculty in redesigning and teaching courses. Second, the CU Denver School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) leverages graduate students from its own Instructional Learning Technologies (ILT) program to partner with faculty in co-constructing the online student experience. This session reveals how these partnerships encourage instructors to stretch their own ideas and notions, reexamine their courses, create alternative student spaces for learning, and emphasize collaboration.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. also be a curse. After all, it's

would always be late.”
14. Gwen, who took courses at the
University of Cincinnati and received
her A.A., is now starting a B.A. degree.
She did not expect the level of
involvement she found. "I expected
only e-mail communication, but the
teachers helped me network beyond my
own course with others and instructors
were available to talk by phone. If I left a
message on the discussion boards, I
had a response in two days."

Ed.D in Management of Programs in
Child and Youth Services from Nova
Southeastern University in Ft.

what she discovered exceeded her
expectations. "I realized that I can
develop strong relationships with my
fellow students without seeing them,"
she said. "Online courses opened up a
whole new world of learning."

Jean had to become familiar with
word processing software and
spreadsheets and how to download
and upload assignments to the Web
site. "I learned to adapt to the way
each professor distributed materials
and returned papers just like a
student in a face-to-face class
does," she said.

faced by these students:

Kathy remarked, "It is
important to stick to your plan and
not good to fall behind. The
professors give you a realistic
timeline and the class Web sites
have all the assignments and
discussion topics listed."

worked in my agency, videotaped me in
the classroom doing a specific activity. I

Distance learning implies a physical separation between student and instructor. An effective distance-learning instructor will provide multiple methods of contact, including a phone number, Skype user name and/or email address, along with general availability and response times.
An effective distance-learning class will incorporate interactive tools, such discussion boards, wikis and blogs, and synchronous audio or video components.
In a distance-learning class, students must be committed to their own success. A traditional classroom environment carries with it a certain level of social pressure: the teacher and other classmates expect each student to come to class every week, complete the assignments, answer the teacher's questions and actively participate in group projects.
The technology required to participate in a distance-learning class must be readily available and fully functional. Furthermore, students must have or acquire a certain level of competency with the technology, including hardware, software and all related accessories, in order to be successful in the course.
Students who enroll in distance-learning programs can suffer from a sense of isolation. While many online programs promote interaction through message boards and instant messaging as part of their curriculum, some students may continue to feel alienated or isolated
To succeed in an online program, students must be motivated self-starters. Most programs allow students to log in whenever they wish -- meaning that as long as they complete their assignments by a certain due date, they're not required to be online at a given time. This flexibility is certainly convenient, especially for adult students who have other responsibilities. However, DL often gives you an opportunity to email your instructor any time or chat online.
Online or distance education has become an advantageous option for people whose personal and professional responsibilities make it difficult for them to attend classes in a traditional classroom setting. This article allows prospective students to learn how students have benefited from the flexible learning environment offered by online courses and how distance education may allow the working professional to pursue their education or further their professional development. Students share insight on why they chose distance education and discuss their experiences with online classes while exploring the challenges they've faced and what they've learned from the experience.
