Study of Titanium Surface Modification & Collagen Grafting for dental implants

The document discusses research on modifying titanium surfaces for dental implants. The goals are to immobilize collagen onto titanium through a coupling agent to improve osseointegration. The methodology includes blasting titanium with hydroxyapatite or aluminum oxide, acid etching, grafting with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and collagen coating. Preliminary results found hydroxyapatite blasting produced lower surface roughness than aluminum oxide blasting and acid etching reduced roughness. Single crystals of Cobalt doped Barium tartrate crystals were grown by single diffusion technique at room temperature. Effect of Cobalt doping in the Barium tartarate crystals has been studied and reported. The XRD pattern shows that Cobalt barium tartarate crystals are polycrystalline in nature and having orthorhombic structure. SEM pictures infer that crystals were grown by layer deposition. The elemental analysis has been carried out by EDAX. The chemical analysis has been performed by FTIR to denote the functional group of grown crystal. The thermal stability has been studied by the TGA, DTG and DSC.

The aim of this study was to prepare and to characterize the structure of Al2O3–3YSZ composites with 5% TiO2 addition as well as the surface modification upon treatments with SnF2 and NaBF4, respectively. SEM micrographs showed the controlled densification of the composites as an effect of 3YSZ and TiO2 addition to alumina matrix. By FTIR and XRD, the characteristics of Al-O and Zr-O vibrations, respectively, the diffractions lines related to a-corundum and zirconia in tetragonal phase were discussed. Qualitative and quantitative results obtained by XPS and ATR FTIR demonstrated that the proposed materials are more sensitive to SnF2 than to NaBF4 treatment.

Melt quench experimental method was used to prepare a new B2O3 based bioactive glasses with low lithium bromide and low lithium fluoride content. The aim of this work is to investigate the bioactivity nature of prepared glass samples with composition Na2O-LiBr-SrO-CdO-B2O3-P2O5 and Na2O-LiF-SrO-CdO-B2O3-P2O5.The melt derived glass ceramics were characterized by using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). For In vitro studies, the bone bonding ability is evaluated by examining the formation of hydroxyl apatite layer (HCA) on its surface when treated in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) for few days. SEM and EDS analysis were used for surface morphology of the glass ceramics as well as to detect the presence of crystalline phase hydroxyl carbonate apatite (HCA) formation onto the surface of glass ceramics. SEM and EDS confirms the in vitro bioactivity of glass ceramics.

Drilling fluids play very important roles in the oil and gas industry hence the need to get method of improving their rheological properties cannot be over emphasized. In this study how drilling fluid rheological property can be improved using zinc oxide and copper (II) oxide nanoparticles were investigated. To achieve these objectives, water based drilling fluids (WBDF) were prepared using the standard laboratory barrel (350 ml) method from bentonite, xanthan gum and water. The Zinc oxide and Copper (II) nanoparticles were introduced into the formulation in different proportions. Brookfield rotational viscometer was used to determine the rheological properties of the samples while Fourier Transformation Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to determine the structural analysis of the interaction between the nanoparticles and the Xanthan gum. The results showed that Zinc oxide and CuO nanoparticle improved the rheological properties of the water based drilling fluid. The zinc oxide at equal proportion with xanthan gum at 60 rpm shear rate increased the viscosity from 834.7 to 1597.3 mPa.s while the copper (II) oxide nanoparticles at equal proportion with xanthan gum at 60 rpm shear rate increased from 834.7 to 1452.3 mPa.s at low temperature of 31.5oC. The FTIR analysis of the nanoparticles and xanthan gum revealed that the interactions of the bonds between the nanoparticles and xanthan gum contributed to the improvement in the rheological properties of the drilling fluids. It is concluded that introduction of ZnO nanoparticles and CuO nanoparticles improved the rheological performance of water based drilling fluids with xanthan gum. The ZnO nanoparticles, however, exhibited better improvement than the CuO.

Synthesis and Microstructure CaTiO3 coating by Sol-Gel Spin-Coating Process

Recently, Calcium Titanate has been introduced as a bioactive bioceramic with acceptable mechanical and better biological properties compared to hydroxyapatite for orthopaedic implant applications. In this study, CaTiO3 nano-structure coating was produced by sol-gel spin-coating route for biomedical applications. Calcium oxide and titanium isopropoxide were used as a precursor for the sol-gel spin-coating. After coating process, the specimen was subjected to heating in oven at 100oC for 24 hours and the sample was heated at 800°C for 2 hours. The phase structure and surface morphology of coating were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Finally, it concluded that the uniform crack-free nano-structured CaTiO3 coatings could be used for the biomedical application.

In present study, the effect of the ultrasound wave stimulation in acceleration of the osteocondutibity of bioactive pure titanium was investigated. Pure titanium (99.9% Ti) processed in chemical and heat treatments was used as a specimen, and soaked in simulated body fluid (SBF) under pulsed ultrasound wave for the planned time periods. The surface of samples was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Xray diffraction, etc, to assess the state of hydroxyapatite formation.SEM images showed that a richer and finer layer of calcium and phosphate compounds covered the titanium surface in the ultrasound wave group as compared with the non-ultrasound group. The measurements of mass of specimens also indicated the efficiency of ultrasound waves for hydroxyapatite formation. These findings suggest that the nucleation and crystallization of apatite on bio-active material surfaces might be promoted by micro-moving and cavitation of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound waves. We propose that pulsed ultrasound stimulation has a great potential for further improvement of osteointegration and osteoconductivity for medical bio-active implants.
