Motivation
Previous study (Pereira et al, 2015):
- analysis based on the company supervisors’ viewpoints
- students have the adequate skills to perform a one-semester internship
in a company
- students’ performance is very well classified by companies’ supervisors
School of Engineering | University of MinhoStudents’ expectations analysis before and after a curricular internship

Final Remarks
Final remarks
• self-evaluation and students’ expectations before starting the internship
are globally very positive, with medians of 4 and 5 for all items
• ten in 22 items showed statistical differences before and after
• in all these cases, the tendency is to observe better classifications before
the internship

Final Remarks
Final remarks
• before internship, students classify very positively their skills towards
professional integration and have very high expectations regarding the
outcomes of the internship;
• after internship, students make a quite similar self-evaluation of their
skills;
• real achievements stay below initial expectations
• even so overall classification is very positive, confirming the importance
of this experience in students’ formation

Editor's Notes

  1. Following this previous study, a research was conducted considering this time, students’ perceptions regarding their internship. The assessment of students’ expectations was formalized by means of two questionnaires fulfilled in two different moments: before the internship starts and after the end of the internship.
  2. Course Characterization and Objectives In the last (3rd) year of the 1st Cycle of Chemical Engineering Graduation there is a course named Project/Internship where the students have the possibility of choosing between doing an engineering project in school or a curricular internship in an industrial company or another external institution. In both cases, students will be able to apply and integrate the different concepts acquired during the three years' graduation. The internship is undoubtedly the preferred option. In 2012/13, from the 47 students that were enrolled in the course, 22 (47%) did an internship. In the following academic year, 42 students (around 70% of the total students) did a curricular internship. In the present academic year, from a total of 56 students, 49 (87.5%) have chosen to do a curricular internship.
  3. Course Characterization and Objectives This internship takes place in the last semester of the graduation, lasts between 4 and 5 months, and students working schedule is similar to that of regular employees in the company, normally four days a week. This commitment in working time is very important to attain one of the main goals of the internship: the first professional experience for the students, allowing them to plunge in the real world of engineering. Meanwhile they must also attend other courses in the same semester, doing it mostly in evening classes.
  4. Course Characterization and Objectives At the end of this course, the student making an internship in an industrial company or another institution must: have developed different skills in what concerns the work in a real organisation; be able to plan his work and meet established deadlines; be able to develop the proposed activities, interpreting and discussing the results obtained; be able to apply the acquired knowledge and develop his work professionally; to write a final report that clearly describes the work done and the results obtained.
  5. within a group of students in order to identify any ambiguous issue and small bugs before their application, and (2) evaluation of internal consistency or reliability of the instrument by estimating the Cronbach's alpha [14] after data collection
  6. Results of the study regarding these two groups of questions
  7. The majority of students are female (68.2%), following the statistics showing that Chemical Engineering has a higher proportion of women than most other areas of engineering. The 44 students have 20 to 28 years of age (54.5% with 21 or less, 40.9% between 22 and 24, 4.6% with age higher or equal to 25). 27.3% of the students live away from home since their parental home is at least more than 100 km far from ISEP (e.g. Monção, Viseu and Borba).
  8. The majority of students are female (68.2%), following the statistics showing that Chemical Engineering has a higher proportion of women than most other areas of engineering. 9. Course Characterization and Objectives The selection of the internship working place may be done in different ways. Some months before the beginning of the final semester, all candidates are invited to make a search of the companies that might suit them in terms of activity area and localisation. At the same time they are also informed about the companies that have already collaborated with the chemical engineering department (CED) in terms of curricular internships and that might be interested in receiving more students for that purpose. Each academic year there has been an increasing number of involved companies, both by means of students search and by CED initiative. The company’s responsible is requested to present an internship plan and some general objectives, focusing in subjects related to the students’ chemical engineering formation. These proposals are validated by the teacher in charge of the course, in accordance with the graduation director. Some students are placed in the companies they have selected themselves, eventually after making an interview. The other students apply to the companies indicated by the CED, and for those there might be different scenarios. In some of those companies the candidates are interviewed and selected by the company’s responsible. In other cases, the CED is asked to do the selection of the student for a specific place and if there are more candidates than places, the selection criteria involve both the students’ academic results, the address of the students and their accessibility conditions.
  10. Besides the tutor in the company, each student making an internship has a dedicated teacher in CED/ISEP with whom he must meet regularly in order to follow the development of the activities. At the middle of the semester, each student must prepare a progress report (to be corrected by his tutor in ISEP) and is asked to present orally the work already done to a group of at least 3 teachers and his colleagues. This is important for the student to organize and systematize the information and to reflect on the way of performing tasks or interpreting results. Often at this time the student is already integrated in the company, executes well but still resists to think about what he is doing and how / why he does it.
