The video starts with an establishing shot of a barren wasteland setting the scene. Throughout the video, various shots are used to establish the band's identity such as performance shots showing the full band together and shots linking to their album cover. Shots are composed using techniques like shallow focus on the lead singer and rule of thirds. Symbolism is used, like a superimposed lion representing the song's themes and the lead singer's feathered jacket representing his power. A variety of shots portray the band together and alone to represent their unity while also showing the lead singer's vulnerability. Transitions link the shots and editing techniques tie the video to the band's aesthetic and music.

Music video analysis
1. Music Video Analysis: The Killers – Human
The video starts with a wide angle establishing shot of a barren wasteland type scene. This
helps to set up the scene for the start of the video by showing where the artists/characters
are. The camerawork is also linked to editing here as the sky has been edited to be purple
which links with the album cover which therefore helps to create the band identity.
The video also uses a lot of performance shots which is conventional of music videos. The
same performance shot also uses a low angle wide shot which allows for the whole band to
be in shot at the same time which also helps to create a band identity. The composition of
the shot cuts off the far left band member which also helps to create the band identity as it
shows them as being a group. This shot was used in conjunction with a pan which shows the
band.
A shallow focus is used to show the lead singer as the most important person in the shot
over the person in the background but also features the lead singer on the far right of the
screen which fits with the rule of thirds.
2. In the video they use a superimposition of their album cover onto a lighting rig which helps
to promote their album and also creates a link between the different products and builds
their band identity.
The superimposition of the lion in the background symbolises the power and wilderness
location. The use of animals in the video directly links to the song name (Human) and the
lyrics in the song which helps to link the products and build a band identity.
The attire for the band is very smart as they are all wearing suits which is unconventional for
the setting but fits with the bands image which helps to establish them as a group. The lead
singer also wears feathers on the shoulders of his jacket which symbolises his power in
relation to the setting with links to native tribes that used feathers as a power symbol.
The video uses a slightly high angle on the lead singer in a shot where he is alone, this
creates the representation of the band being together as in the shot where the lead singer is
alone and the camerawork shows him as being vulnerable.
3. After the high angle of the lead singer, it dissolves into a long shot wide angle of the whole
band which shows them as being together in a scene that isn’t in a performance
environment like the rest of the video. The video features a lot of dissolve transitions
between shots which helps as it is a reflective transition and allows it to fit with the music.
The sun was given a mosaic effect in editing which helps to link to the album cover, this is
then used as a graphics match to insert the album cover, this helps to create a sense of band
identity.
This shot is used as an insert between two performance style shots, the band is on the left
third of the shot which shows them as being the focal point and the most important, it also
features the mosaic sun style which links directly to the album cover, creating a sense of
band image.
In all of the shots in the video, a vignette effect which makes the video look classic and also
stylizes the video to some extent and also helps to fit with the setting which helps to fit with
the conventions of a music video from the indie genre.
4. This shot uses a shift in focus during the pan around the guitarist, the change in focus
creates an artistic sense to the shot and helps to conform to the conventions of genre. The
guitarist is position in the middle of the shot with some headroom and there isn’t anything
else in the shot that would obscure the focus on the guitarist, making him the most
important thing in the shot.
This shot fits with the music in the background as it has been edited and synced to when the
cable whips, the music starts. This helps to create a visual aid to the music starting which fits
with the genre.
This shot is linked with the start of the vocals, when the vocals start, the person walks out
from behind the rock, this creates a sense of performance to the video which fits with the
conventions of the genre as conventionally in indie videos the artists are seen to be
performing.
During the pre-chorus the shot generally changes every time the chord pitch changes in the
soundtrack, this creates linking and conventions
