3. The opening of the video the viewer is introduced to shot of fairy lights in out
of focus give it a starry effect.
The camera is somewhat shaky when introducing the first shot .
The song starts off instrumental no vocals, the instruments involved seem to
be a guitar and keyboard. The song is quite calm and there is a rhythm going
that is repeating.
The keyboard is played at a quite high pitch which goes very well with fairly
lights which gives it that magical, starry sound effect.
The video then cuts to the keyboard being played, it’s a close up shot of the
one of the members fingers playing on the keyboard. Which gives it the
mysterious effect where we gradually get to see the band. the shot is very
much still.
Then the next shot is of an in focus close up shot of a fairy light. This maybe
a way of introducing the viewer to the detailed setting of place, so that the
viewer get a sense of actually be there. The shot is a slightly shaky but not
very noticeable.
It then cuts to another close up shot of the guitar being played, and again
the member’s face isn’t in the frame but his hands playing the instrument.
However this does follow Goodwin’s convention of how the relationship of the
music and the visuals in literal sense. The shot is very much still.
The pace of the editing is slow at this point, since it’s a nice mellow
introduction of the song.
4.
5. During these few shots, the edit seems to cut back to the instruments
same instruments being played. But the only difference is that in the
keyboard shot, it’s a slight closer shot than the previous keyboard shot
and this goes same for the guitar shot. This is quite a popular convention
in rock, that is probably why it’s so emphasised, as rock videos is often
associated with bright lights, performance camera shot and sometimes
voyeurism; this is slightly different since it’s alternative rock.
We then have long shot of all the band members this establishes a
recognisable image. This done so that the viewer knows the creative
minds that are involved in constructing the music and are therefore able
to recognise them again if the view them in another music video or
perhaps another form of media such a poster, newspaper and so on.
The viewer is then first introduced to their first close up shot of the artist
however this is kind of odd since it didn’t start off with the main lead
singer but of one the other members. However the shot is at low angle
and she is in focus whilst everything behind her is out of focus making
her pop out more. This may indicate that she plays an important role with
in the band as she seems to be the only female in it. Appearance wise
she somewhat fits the folk rock look which come off with generic looking,
no piercing or no tattoos as seen so far, very different from the main
stream rock.
6.
7. The next shot is quite clever as it first appears with the main leader singer
out focused and the mic is in focus, then Passenger (leader singer) comes
into focus with mic. This very clever directing and cinematography. The shot
is of Passenger close up which is an example of one of Goodwin’s
conventions, predominance close up. This is used for more an intermit
experience with the viewer and the artist, so that wouldn’t often be
possible in real life. This also establishes a recognisable image, as the
viewers will be able to recognise him again in other forms of media and
music videos.
This is also when the vocals of the song is introduced when starts to sing
into the mic.
The video then cuts to a side shot of Passenger with a medium shot which
reveals more of him and we able to view his clothing, such as his denim
shirt which is the artist’s own style or as Goodwin would phrase it, star
iconography. Even though you may not able to view in this video, it’s
something that his well known of wearing.
We get another shot of the main lead singer in a low angle shot just
showing how important he is and this is also shown in how he is perfectly
centred in the middle of the frame.
Then it video cuts to a close up shot of a guitar being played the camera
has changed from still to hand held effect and it slowly moves up (not tilt)
revealing another member of the band. He is also another example of
predominance close up.
8.
9. The viewer is then shown the long shot of the whole band with passenger in
the centre of the frame and with light coming down on him indicating his that
his the centre of the attention, the main attraction. The edit then cleverly
quickly cuts to an exact shot of them but at different time when they are
actually performing in front of a crowd.
At the exact moment of the cut transition the dynamic nature of the song is
amplified, all members of the band are playing, instruments such the drums,
keyboard, guitar and cello are all playing.
This same shot really symbolises the rock genre, of being of front of crowd
and preforming, with a low light environment and bright lights featured to
give it that magical effect.
The video is then cut to crowd who seem to be memorised by the band
performance. The camera is seems hand held in shots of the crowd and the
camera pans to try and get the viewer immersed in the environment and feel
like they are actually there watching performance. It
The video than cuts back to passenger but this shot is at the crowd’s point of
view, which really makes viewer of actually being there live and look up at
passenger as he performs.
The viewer is than shown a wide shot of the whole crowd, this just comes to
show how popular the band and passenger are. Again, illustrating the typical
rock genre of having an immense large crowd cheering them on as they
perform.
10.
11. Next few shots are a different set up in which its set before the actually
performance of the last shot.
So we get close up wires connect to instruments and guitar cases setting the
environment and the tone for the viewer that this is a different set up. This
does break continuity as time does seem to follow the right chronological
order.
You get to members of the band set up the musical equipment ready for their
performance.
This also breaks Goodwin’s convention of relationship between visuals and
music as you don’t actually see any performance, no vocals, no instruments
being played. It just doesn’t match
It also goes against relationship between the visuals and the lyrics as the song
is clearly about move on from a relationship and letting some you previously
loved go. However the visuals just show the band and people setting up
equipment and getting ready to perform. However there might be a deeper
meaning or metaphor behind it all but it just isn’t clearly visible.
You also get to close up shots of passenger quite relaxed this also being
another example of predominance close up.
The pace of the editing has built up speed to accommodate the dynamic
change of the music.
There are several shots of angles used such a low angle shot of Passenger
whilst his sat down having conversation, there straight angle shots of people
helping with equipment's and carrying boxes and so on.
12.
13. These next few shots continue with the band members and Passenger
practising before the performance. There are more predominance close up
shots of other members that weren’t previously shown of the band which
allows the viewer the intimate experience that they would not so often get
from real life. By having close up shots you are also able to see more of their
fascial features and therefore making them more memorable to spot in the
future.
You also get the intimate experience as the viewer also get to see them in
the normal environment just before they are able to perform, all talking and
laughing. This some what makes them able to relate to them as people.
In the video it also features close up shots again of instruments being played
assuming it’s practise right before the actually performance.
Then the video cuts right back at the crowd with a wide angle shot the same
shot that was taken before the video broke continuity. You see the raging
crowd cheering the band and Passenger coming up on stage.
The editing of the pace does vary in speed but it’s quite slow and not too
fast.
You get few handheld shots, like when there all sat on the sofa whilst
Passenger is playing on the guitar and sing which however isn’t in sync with
the actually song. Another example of Goodwin's conventions been broken.
We also get a Steadicam shot which follows Passenger out to the door which
gives the viewer the impression that it’s a point of view shot and I actually
feel like they are following Passenger himself onto stage.
14.
15. The video carries on as a compilation of shots of either Passenger or both Passenger and
the band performing in front of the crowd. The is clearly distinguished by the colour of the
lights used, Passenger on solo the lights are blue when his with the band its red lights.
This clearly follows the rock genre that Goodwin mention, certain characterises of a video
that make it certain type of genre.
The concert environment is very dark and the only thing that seems to be lighting it is the
fairy lights which again is another typical rock genre thing.
Again and again the most focus has been put on Passenger the camera shows him the
centre of the frame or actually in the frame, its only so rare do we get to actually see other
members in a frame by themselves.
Even performance wise, he does his only sole where his the only performing. There's one
shot where the its canted angle indicate an imbalance, the fact that it’s just him and no
one else performing.
We also get a point of view shot from the crowd where all the band members are in frame
and once again giving the viewer the immerse feeling actually being in the crowd.
Even at this point of the music video, the visuals still don’t match the music this may be
emphasised just to show the difference between alternative rock and mainstream rock. In
that they aren’t afraid of breaking the conventions as they are different from the
mainstream rock. This is also visible in their clothing and behaviour; they aren’t acting
violent and screaming, they don’t have tattoos and aren’t seen shirtless and having long
hair. They seem to very smart-casual clothing which isn’t often associated with main
stream rock.
There is also another shot of Passenger in a medium close up shot where the camera is
shooting him on his side whilst singing to the crowd. This shot is very different from the
others, as you view Passenger, in complete dark and no but the light coming down on him.
This may just indicate that this song might just be about him since he appears so much in
the video
16.
17. When the song hits the chorus again, the dynamic nature of the song is
amplified, this is when the visuals and the music starts to match. The first
appearances of this is in the close up shot of the drummer hitting cymbal
and then this starts a chain reaction. Also there are close up shot of the
keyboard and the guitar again, the repetition of the it being featured so
often may just come to show how the song is mostly made out of those
two instruments.
There also close up shots of the other members such as the ginger female
vocalist, who is shot with a low angle shot, this maybe a point view shot
of the crowd, looking up at her. There’s also another close up shot of
another male member, who’s the guitarist and a vocalist. The camera
captures him in focus whilst you see the female vocalist out of focus
making the male member stand out. Once again this is all example of
Goodwin’s convention of predominance close up.
We also once again cut to close up shot of close up shot of Passenger
with his mouth against the mic and actually singing to sync with the song.
He looks directly into the camera as if sing to the viewer making it that
more of an intimate experience.
All the close up shots of the instruments or of the band members apart
from Passenger’s close up shot; seem to involve a lot of handheld camera
work and camera movement. This is very often used in mainstream rock
music video or mainstream music videos, this once again comes to show
alternative rock like to break away from the norm.
18.
19. In these next few shots it’s very visible that its all handheld and it get to
the point where it’s a bit too much. You combination you see a lot of
camera movement such as when the when one of the member are
playing cello and the camera starts of with medium shot of his face in
frame and then slowly starts to slowly move down (not tilt) to show his
cello being played.
There’s also extremely close up shot of the female vocalist sing against
the mic at a straight on angle.
We also once again get another shot of the whole band and Passenger
as previously shot, performing to the crowd and in sync with the song.
The pacing of the cut has really changed it’s been in match with the
rhythm of the music throughout the whole music video.
There is another shot of Passenger, a side shot, medium long shot,
where the viewer is able to view him passionately stamping his feet to
the rhythm of the music whilst playing his guitar.
The camera handheld is very visible when shooting Passenger in close
up shot of face close to the mic. Whilst singing the camera pans right to
the point where his almost out of frame and then quickly fills him back
in the frame. This may have been done purpose as they wanted to go for
that armature, niche look which again isn’t often associate with
mainstream music videos.
20.
21. As the song hit the last chorus, all the instruments stop playing apart
from the guitar, the dynamic nature of the music decreased, the tempo
has slowed down and so has the editing pace of the video.
There’s a medium shot of Passenger, even though the shot is medium shot
the viewer is clearly able to see the facial expression and passionate of
Passenger as his face is going red and his beating his hand against his
chest. This forms much more of an intimate relationship with the viewer
and artist and this is also clearly visible with the reaction of the crowd as
they are so immerse in the music. By flicking shots back and forth
between the passenger and the crowd it illustrate an intimate relationship
between the artist and the crowd, the same as the viewer and the artist.
Then there’s a shot, shooting the back of Passenger showing that his in
the complete dark and that no it’s just him and the guitar that are playing
and no one else. As again showing that his the main attraction, as the
spot light is on him.
The last shot of the video lasts 1 minute and 6 seconds, this gives a very
dramatic end to the video as it’s just Passenger in the complete dark
singing into the mic. Its shot in a close up shot which once again gives the
effect of predominance close up. The last shot is handheld giving it that
niche, armature look to it. As the song is dies off the camera shakily tilts
down as it matches the dynamic nature of the music.
