Questions
4. What is a student led
conference?
An opportunity for students to tell you about the
learning they have done over the first two terms of
the year.
5. Key Beliefs
SLC puts the student in the centre of the learning
conversation
Students are the ones who need all the information
yet traditionally they are the ones who have known
the least.
In the 21Century students need to be at the centre of
the learning conversation.
6. If the teacher or the parent does all of the talking –
the message is the teacher is in charge of the
learning – not the child
Every child should have an opportunity to discuss
their learning with a significant adult in their life
7. Student led Conference
The focus is on the child's learning
The ownership of the child's learning is with the child
The best person to talk about their learning is the
learner
Other issues such as social or behavioural matters
can be discussed at another time – not this
conference – its about learning
8. What does a SLC look like?:
A conversation between the tamariki and their parent
about learning
Other families are present in the room at the same time
The teacher is present as facilitator
Student portfolios, workbooks, displays in the room,
and activities support the conversation
9. Messages for Parents
Make the appointment time
Go with your child to the classroom
Other families will be in the room at the same time
Look at their books, Portfolios, displays
Be prepared to stay for around 30 minutes
Listen carefully and ask questions about their
learning
Support the learning plan at home
