Principle 11 needs to go! by Ken France at #AgileIndia2019Agile India
The Principles in the Agile Manifesto provide us guidance on how to have an Agile mindset in our organizations. Principle 11 within the Manifesto states "The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams". While this works well for autonomous teams, it proves to be challenging for large organizations with dozens or even hundreds of teams who need to share common architectures and design patterns.
This talk will present a case study of a large retail organization and explore their journey from a highly centralized/governance-based technology organization to a more distributed/collaborative one and explore their lessons learned and success/failure patterns along the way. In the end, we'll answer the question about whether or not Principle 11 scales!

Editor's Notes
Good morning
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Stuart Hodge, Project Development Manager at RESA. AKA, the guy who’s been filling up your inbox about this event and program.
Tie in to previous presenters
Today, I want to show you the Develop program, what we have lined up for participants in the program and the value it can bring to your business
The Why
As our previous three speakers have shown, there are many opportunities in the resources industry for companies with the right expertise. The problem lies in the exacting standards that resource companies have- to access this market, the barrier to entry as a company is high, and as anyone who has done any business in the space will tell you, without foreknowledge of the needs of major companies it’s very hard to make any headway.
Tie to Nicole Nott’s presentation & Kevin Morris
Like all industries, resources has it’s own culture, process, procedure and priorities that must be understood to become a successful supplier.
For example, the culture of safety is paramount in the sector, and it’s not just a case of doing the right thing- processes must be documented and agreed upon before a company gets anywhere near site, and thes processes must be understood within the whole mine site context- it’s not just a case of turning up with a ute full of tools! These requirements are not exclusive to the mining side of things, they are propagated throughout the entire METS supply chain and throughout Oil and Gas, with specific requirements and accreditations to navigate.
The Develop program is aimed to help you overcome these barriers and build your business to a resources standard, and to ultimately give you the tools you need to increase your market share, whether as a new supplier or as a company already within the industry
The Who
The Develop Program is targeted at those among you who are looking to increase your profile in the resources industry. For those of you who are experienced suppliers, we’ll talk about the Extend program later in the session. This porgram is also excellent for companies who perhaps have a share in just one part of the sector, and are looking to move into another part as well
We aren’t targeting companies who provide a particular product offering here- the program is open to companies with a wide range of core business- but we really want those of you who commit to be in a position where you can actually change how you operate- we want your business to be able to realise the opportunity and become more competitive.
In these constrained times, working ON the business is just as important as working IN the business, and adapting to meet the challenges now will put you in good stead when the resources cycle ticks up
The What & When
In terms of format, we have tried to maximise the interactivity and networking opportunity from the program. Running from March to August, the program is designed to give you the understanding and tools you need to do business in the Mining and Oil & Gas sectors.
We will run alternating half day seminars and full day workshops, with the workshops acting as a chance to apply the tools and knowledge from the seminars. The Workshops especially will be designed around working with peer companies to navigate the industry. We will also engage guest presenters to make sure that you get the best, most up to date information on the industry and base your strategy on real business experience. Our program partners will mentor you through the program so you can tap into their wealth of experience, and build your network in the industry
RESA are drawing on our industry network to ensure that you get access to the best presenters. A key component of our program will be RoweSMG, a strategic management consultancy with extensive experience in the Oil and Gas industry, having worked with a number of key resource organisations including Santos, Rio Tinto and Barrick Gold. The RoweSMG team will deliver the seminars and workshops throughout the program and provide expert mentoring and advice out of session.
In addition to Rowe SMG, we will be bringing in key guest speakers – including Kevin, from earlier today – to present on a range of topics and case studies. We want to provide you not just one perspective, but a range of voices from different parts of the sector to make sure you get a fuller, clearer picture
The How
The program will follow the Half-day Seminars with a full day workshop, each session being scheduled a month apart. These sessions are designed to build upon each other, to progressively arm you with the tools and strategies to increase your Industry participation. Over the course of the program you will build your value proposition and your business’ suitability to supply- from the big things like quality and safety systems to the culture of delivery in the sector, and how to best approach, tender, and win within the sector.
These sessions are designed to build upon one another and lead your business on a development journey- it’s not just one-and-done sessions, but a full learning program. Other programs in the past have focused on just one of these areas, we have decided that the better approach is to link the context all together
The sessions will run out of a central location, the CCF SA building at Thebarton.
All of the content will also be filmed, like today, and available through an exclusive web portal.
This portal will include filmed presentations, templates, supporting information and our supplier risk and readiness assessment tool.
The online portal will be open past the end of the program to participants- we want this to be a valuable resource for you as you continue on your resources journey, and we will update this toolbox over time
During the program you will also have access to our custom risk and readiness tool, which will build over the program as a snapshot of your current business. After each seminar, we will unlock a new part of the assessment, and after filling out each section we will provide you with a risk report highlighting areas of strategy and business systems that your company is performing well, and others that require some attention. By going through this process you can identify the action plan required for your company to be truly resources ready, and we feel that this is a great way to take the pulse of where you are on the journey. It’s not an onerous assessment, just a health check
Integrated program drawing in industry experts and RESA’s industry network with the full backing of the SA government, with expert mentoring and the tools and templates you need to succeed
On-ramp: Delivering the knowledge, understanding and tools to successfully target the resources sector
In these constrained times, we’ve worked with the State Government and our suppliers to get you the best deal possible. The $1,600 All-inclusive cost covers the entire program, the workshops and seminars, access to all of the expertise and advice of the industry experts we’ve assembled, and is on a per-company basis.
That price wouldn’t buy you a day with an industry consultant
So to sign up for the program, head to the URL shown on screen- we will send this link around to everyone here at the conclusion of today’s session, so expect an email with this and the [Extend] information before the end of the day. It’s also on the back of the handout in front of you in full
I can take some questions now, but myself, and the rest of the RESA team – Phil, Paula, and Mel, and DSD team including Lachlan and Merril will also be here at morning tea in a moment and at the conclusion of the session to field your questions.
Places are limited, so signing up sooner is better.
Now, morning tea!
