A 72-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with sudden onset right-sided numbness, weakness, and slurred speech over 2 hours. While this could indicate a stroke or transient ischemic attack, there are several potential "stroke mimics" that can cause similar symptoms, such as toxic metabolic disorders, drug ingestion, seizures, migraines, demyelinating disorders, cerebrovascular abnormalities, increased intracranial pressure, and peripheral neuropathies. Doctors are advised to initially consider stroke but also consider potential mimicking conditions.
