Current situation
Global Health Workforce Alliance and WHO estimated a gap of 7.2 million
professional health workers in 2012,set to rise to 12.9 million over the
next decades. (1)
Projected shortage of 18 million health workers to achieve and sustain the
Sustainable Development Goals primarily in low and lower-middle income
countries.
Shortage of health workers will hit African countries the hardest – a region
that makes up 75% of the global burden of HIV/AIDS.
2 million more doctors, nurses and midwives are required.
