Cheltenham Road Allotment available
We have an allotment full of peonies that the present owners
are giving up due to age.
We would like it to go to someone who has an interest in peonies and
would keep it as it is. It could even be for two people. Very low
maintenance. All it needs is to be cut low in the autumn, and weed each
square and that’s it.
Contact Paddy on paddymel@aprilcottagebb.co.uk for more information.

Talk by Lucia Gahlin
'Wonderful Things!'
Tutankhamun's Tomb and Treasures
In 2022 we celebrate the centenary of the greatest
archaeological discovery - the excava on of Tutankhamun’s
tomb by Howard Carter in 1922. In this lecture Lucia explores
this unusual tomb and its iconic treasures and discusses
Carter’s discovery and what happened to the incredible wealth
of funerary goods found within.
Doors open at 7pm. Talks start at 7:30pm promptly.
Refreshments are available.
Talks are free to members. Visitors are welcome and we ask for a
contribution of £7.
More details on www.theartssocietycorinium.org/talks/tutankhamun
The Tuesday Group
The Group had the opportunity to hear how a Woman works in a ‘Man’s World’
as Lyn Hilditch gave us a very interesting and entertaining talk on her career as
an air traffic controller on Tuesday 7th
June.
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our outing to Windsor for July as there is
not enough members and friends available to go on this coach trip. We do not
have a meeting in August as many people will be away.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 6th
September.
Mrs Kate Peake will be giving a talk on Gloucestershire Events and Traditions
which are running currently in the County. This should be a very entertaining
evening so we do hope that as many members and friends will be able to join
us for this talk.
On Tuesday 4th
October, Ian MacKintosh will be giving us a talk on ‘4 Hundred
Years of Stroudwater Textiles.’
Meetings are held at Stratton Village Hall, Stratton, Cirencester at 7.00 for
7.30pm start. £2.00 to include light refreshments.

OPERATION MINCEMEAT
Thursday, 28th
July 2022 7.00 – 7.30p.m.
Cast: Colin Firth, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Rufus Wright, Ruby
Bentall, Charlotte Hamblin, Jason Isaccs, Penelope Wilton, Johnny Flynn,
Lorne Macfadyen, Mark Gatiss, Casper Jennings, Hattie Morahan, Dolly
Gadsdon, Simon Russell Beale, Michael Bott, Alex Jennings, Ellie Haddington
Director: John Madden
In the context of WW2 narratives, the story of Operation Mincemeat is
unique a bizarre and seductive cinematic blend of high-level espionage
and ingenious fiction, where the stakes could hardly be higher. Michelle
AshfordÕs script fuses multiple strands and moods: tense, romantic,
thrilling, unexpectedly funny and endlessly surprising. It tells a richly
human story of the soldiers we seldom see, who fight a different kind of
war in shadows and deception, haunted by the knowledge that certainty
and guarantee of success are nowhere to be found.

“The English Winter – Ending in July, To Recommence in August“ Lord Byron 1788-1824
Who knows what we will encounter weather-wise, in July? But I do hope the weather is
kind and we have an excellent gardening month or plenty of gardens to visit and enjoy.
I visited Highnam Court Gardens the other week. The last me I visited was before
Covid, and I was amazed now at the new plan ngs, the gardens dripping with roses, a vast
selec on of wooden animal and bird sculptures and borders becoming more established.
It was very colourful and I certainly recommend a visit, also an excellent cup of tea and
cake in the orangery!
There are no mee ngs this month, but diary dates for members are:
Thursday 7th July - a Show Seminar, 7pm at the Stra on Village Hall
and Sunday 10th July - our annual Garden Party. 2.30 – 5pm.
Tips for July are:
· Make sure there are supports for border plants and dead head to ensure further blooms
· Water wisely in the evening or morning to conserve water and feed pots regularly
· Complete the thinning of fruit if not done last month a er the June drop
· When strawberry picking is complete, remove the protec on from around the plants
and cut back the leaves with shears, then water
· Consider giving the lawn a quick ac ng summer feed
· Give your indoor plants the benefit of a ‘holiday outside’ for the summer
· VERY importantly – pick courge es before they become marrows!

4th -9th July: Hampton Court Flower Show. Marchants Coaches have a trip on 9th July,

Local Complaint from a concerned
resident in Whiteway
Lazy Dog-owners!!
There are some lazy dog-owners who come
down Whiteway View and allow their dogs to mess
on the pavement. Several other people have had
the same problem and even have had 1 or 2 lots of
dog mess in their gardens,
Could this lazy person clean up after their
dog?
I had another lovely lady say to me she had
cleared up the dog mess as she felt embarrassed
to be a dog owner!!
The person responsible knows who they are and
perhaps if they are too lazy to clean up after
their dog then they should think whether or not
they should be a dog owner. I think not…
Someone often allows their dogs - usually
around 4 or 5 dogs - to race up and down the
road. All are off leads and they were rude when
someone dared to suggest the dogs should be on
leads, as they could pose a problem to car drivers,
young children and older people.
This is a busy road down to the fields and
everyone should be able to walk there without
having to worry about walking in dog mess, which
can cause blindness in children if they get it on
themselves.

  • 10. 10 Stratton News - July 2022 Cirencester’s Gardening Club Stratton & Baunton Horticultural Society C G “The English Winter – Ending in July, To Recommence in August“ Lord Byron 1788-1824 Who knows what we will encounter weather-wise, in July? But I do hope the weather is kind and we have an excellent gardening month or plenty of gardens to visit and enjoy. I visited Highnam Court Gardens the other week. The last me I visited was before Covid, and I was amazed now at the new plan ngs, the gardens dripping with roses, a vast selec on of wooden animal and bird sculptures and borders becoming more established. It was very colourful and I certainly recommend a visit, also an excellent cup of tea and cake in the orangery! There are no mee ngs this month, but diary dates for members are: Thursday 7th July - a Show Seminar, 7pm at the Stra on Village Hall and Sunday 10th July - our annual Garden Party. 2.30 – 5pm. Tips for July are: · Make sure there are supports for border plants and dead head to ensure further blooms · Water wisely in the evening or morning to conserve water and feed pots regularly · Complete the thinning of fruit if not done last month a er the June drop · When strawberry picking is complete, remove the protec on from around the plants and cut back the leaves with shears, then water · Consider giving the lawn a quick ac ng summer feed · Give your indoor plants the benefit of a ‘holiday outside’ for the summer · VERY importantly – pick courge es before they become marrows! Local Complaint from a concerned resident in Whiteway Lazy Dog-owners!! There are some lazy dog-owners who come down Whiteway View and allow their dogs to mess on the pavement. Several other people have had the same problem and even have had 1 or 2 lots of dog mess in their gardens, Could this lazy person clean up after their dog? I had another lovely lady say to me she had cleared up the dog mess as she felt embarrassed to be a dog owner!! The person responsible knows who they are and perhaps if they are too lazy to clean up after their dog then they should think whether or not they should be a dog owner. I think not… Someone often allows their dogs - usually around 4 or 5 dogs - to race up and down the road. All are off leads and they were rude when someone dared to suggest the dogs should be on leads, as they could pose a problem to car drivers, young children and older people. This is a busy road down to the fields and everyone should be able to walk there without having to worry about walking in dog mess, which can cause blindness in children if they get it on themselves.
