So many happy memories for all of us who knew her, of which Denise was so central. We

The Tuesday Group
Unfortunately due to the Tuesday Group having to cancel their talks for the 2 years while the
Covid epidemic was on, we have not had as many people attending their talks so we are
hoping that all our old and new friends will be returning to join in once again.
We had a very entertaining evening on Tuesday 6th
September when Kate Peake showed us
many films and videos of traditional events which took place over the past year in
Gloucestershire. This included shots from the Cheese Rolling at Coopers Hill, and the Steam
Fair which was held at South Cerney Air Field in August
On Tuesday 4th
October, we will be having a talk by Ian MacKintosh on
400 Hundred Years of Stroudwater Textiles at Stratton Village Hall, 7.00
for 7.30 pm.

Our first mee ng for the Season started in September with a talk by Ruth Chivers, the
Publicity Officer for Gloucestershire for the Na onal Garden Scheme. Bordering three
coun es, we are lucky to have many gardens to view, from small to large, opened by
dedicated gardeners star ng with snowdrops to Autumn colours.
The N.G.S. is 95 years old and since 1927 has been the most significant charitable
fundraiser of nursing in the United Kingdom. It was started by the philanthropist William
Rathbone when there was no NHS. He wanted to raise funds for paid nurses to care for
pa ents., so he contacted Florence Nigh ngale, who suggested an ins tute to train women
to be district nurses. To fund this, socialite Elsie Wragg suggested opening gardens.
In 1927, 609 gardens were opened, cos ng a shilling per person, including King George V
who opened Sandringham, Norfolk. These included Sudeley Castle and Westbury Court,
and 80 of these gardens are s ll open today. In 1984 saw the first dona on to Macmillan
Nurses and 1996, 5 new nursing and health organisa ons were included such as Parkinson
UK.
Today there are over 3500 gardens open and in 2021 the NGS raised over £3million. Please
look at their website for gardens to visit and you will enjoy some lovely gardens as well as a
cup of tea and cake at most venues. www.ngs.org.uk while raising funds for nursing care.
Following this most interes ng talk, we had a mely demonstra on by our commi ee
member, Gerald Blackwell. This was on taking pelargonium cu ngs. Several of us have
been inspired to do so and await our results.

Jobs to do in October:
¨ Autumn winds blowing the leaves off the trees will make lovely leaf mould, so collect
them up
¨ A selec ve cut back of perennials and ornamental grasses leaving some stems over
winter to provide homes and food for wildlife.
¨ Divide , summer flowering plants such as asters, hemerocallis, Siberian iris, lily of the
valley, oriental poppy, peonies.
¨ Repair lawns, by sowing seed while the soil is s ll warm. Rake the area removing
weeds or a dead thatch and over-seed any sparse areas. Germina on should take 7 to
10 days.

Here at Citizens Advice Stroud and Cotswold Districts we are seeing an
increase in demand for our services as a result of the cost of living crisis.
Over the last three months we have seen a 92% increase in requests for charitable
help from the same period last year, with people seeking help with food, fuel or
hardship fund payments.
Whilst the Energy Price Guarantee announced on the 8th
September comes as a
huge relief to households, energy bills are still very high. In winter 2021, the energy
price cap was set at £1,277 for typical use. The new Price Guarantee starting on 1
October for households on typical use will be £2,500 a year.
We are very concerned about how vulnerable residents will cope this autumn and
winter when temperatures drop and they need to turn their heating on. We have
already advised clients on prepayment meters who do not have enough credit to run
medical equipment that relies on electricity; clients who cannot afford to heat their
water; parents who are skipping meals to feed their children and pensioners unable to
afford their fuel bills. In our largely rural districts, many residents rely on oil for heating
and hot water and we have been contacted by people who cannot afford the cost of
the minimum order.
What to do if you are worrying about money...
Our national Citizens Advice website (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) has lots of
useful advice and tools to help you.
We would suggest:
1. working out your budget and think about where you might be able to make
savings. Look at the debt guidance too if you have any debts;
2. contact your energy supplier to see what help they can offer;
3. check if you might be entitled to any benefits such as Universal Credit, Council
Tax Support, Pension Credit or disability benefits. You can use online benefit
calculators such as Turn2Us, Entitledto or Policy in Practice;
4. make sure you have received any cost of living payments that you are entitled to
including the council tax rebate if you are in a council tax Band A-D property.

supporting local people since 2001. We help people through difficult times,

backgrounds who offer their time and energy to help support every aspect
of the organisation.
