In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

At Citizens Advice, we have
been contacted by a
increasing number of people who did not
realise that they now had to apply for
their pension
You should get a letter from the
Pension Service no later than 2 months
before your 66th birthday (the current
State Pension Age) telling you what to do
to claim your pension. If you do not
receive this letter you can still make a
claim in the 4 months before reaching
your state pension age.
It is important to claim your State
Pension as soon as you can to avoid
delays in payment by leaving claiming
too close to your 66th birthday.
How to claim: The quickest way to get
your State Pension is to apply online at
www.gov.uk/get-state-pension, but if you
don’t have access to the internet, you can
request a form by calling the Pension
Service on 0800 731 7898.
You can check your State Pension age
online at www.gov.uk/state-pension-age
and get a forecast of how much money
you might get at www.gov.uk/check-
state-pension or ask them in writing.
Further information on the State Pension
is at www.gov.uk/new-state-pension or
see our website –
www.citizensadvice.org.uk.
Some of our clients have experienced
delays after claiming which has caused
them financial hardship. If you need any
help to claim your State Pension or
experience problems with claiming, do
contact one of our friendly advisers at
Stroud and Cotswold Citizens Advice.
Please call:
0808 800 0510 or 0808 800 511
Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm (calls
are free from landlines and most mobiles).
or use our online email page at
www.citizensadvice-
stroudandcotswold.org.uk/stroud-cab-
email-advice.php
NOTE: We are now able to see a limited
number of clients whose problem cannot
be dealt with on the phone, in person at
our Cirencester office. Due to Covid, we
cannot offer drop in sessions but if you
need face-to-face advice, you can be
seen by appointment only. We are
planning to open our outreach sessions
gradually from December onwards.
