Cirencester Rotary Club Easter Egg
Extravaganza
The Drillmans pub kindly agreed to take part this
year in Cirencester Rotary Clubs Easter Egg
Extravaganza and raised £160!
The Rotary Club thanked the pub for taking part and
congratulated Poppy on her win! Each participant paid £2
with a chance to win a 1kg Easter egg. President Elect
Chris Tovey made the draw just before Easter and the
winner was Poppy from Oink Catering. The photo shows
Jordon Selby, grand-son of the late Dick and Denise Selby,
presenting the egg to Poppy.
It was an exciting first day back at School
at Stratton C of E Primary this week, with
a special guest joining for morning
assembly. The School was excited to
greet Chris Thorne of Persimmon Homes
and accept a cheque for £1,000! The
School was awarded the funds from
Persimmon Homes Community
Champions initiative.
Sales Director for Persimmon Homes
Wessex, Pauline Fletcher said:
“Persimmon Wessex is delighted to be
able to support Stratton CoE Primary
School in Cirencester. As a local
business we want to deliver more than
just high quality homes – we’re
also committed to providing
support and leaving a lasting
positive legacy in the
communities we build in.’’
The School plan to use the
funds to extend reading for
pleasure beyond the classroom
and encourage children to
develop their love of books in a
fresh new environment.
Mrs Barbara Cartwright,
Teacher at Stratton Primary
School said:
'We are delighted that
Persimmon Homes are helping
us to promote reading for pleasure in our
school. Following recent improvements
to our library, we would like to take the
fun of reading into the playground with
our own Reading Shed.
This facility will contain a prime selection
of our lovely books, managed by our Y6
librarians, along with some rugs for the
children to comfortably take their reading
outside. We can’t wait to see them
curled up under the trees and chattering
about which books they have chosen!'

HIKE FOR HOME-START COTSWOLDS!
On the morning of Wednesday 3rd May 2023, why not spend an enjoyable couple
of hours walking through the beautiful countryside of the Coln Valley, in aid of family
support charity Home-Start Cotswolds?
The circular walk starts and finishes at Cripps Barn, near Bibury (GL7 5BA) and
takes in the pretty village of Winson. There are no steep hills and with the kind
permission of local landowners, the walk includes land not usually accessible to the
public – an ‘exclusive’ on some lovely views!
After building up an appetite, you can stay on for a delicious two-course lunch
cooked by the chefs at Cripps Barn (lunch places are limited so please check
availability on the Home-Start Cotswolds website below).
Tickets are £15 for the walk only (including refreshments) and £30 for the walk
with lunch. All proceeds will go towards supporting families in the Cotswolds with
young children, who are going through difficult times. Everyone is welcome, including
dogs on leads and there is free parking.
For more information and to book, please visit
www.home-start-cotswolds.org.uk and go to the
‘News’ tab.
Alternatively you can call 01285 885391.

April has been dogged by heavy showers, wind and occasional bursts of sun-
shine. Luckily our mee ng evening was dry and we were very pleased to
welcome a roomful of members, with a couple of visitors for our talk by
Katherine Kear, who came to give a talk en tled ‘Tales from the Po ng Shed’.
Katherine began by saying that ritual beliefs are important in our lives: to look
back to learn from the past that we are not masters of nature, but merely
gardeners of nature.
We were read a deligh ul poem by Richard Edwards ‘ Ten Tall Oak Trees’ - how
one-by-one ten trees are felled un l there are none – a sobering thought.
Katherine described how nature gives us plants to use as medicines: pulmonaria
for the lungs; strawberries for the heart; woundwort for self heal, but you
should respect your plants and give thanks to the spirits of the garden - even
King Charles talks to his plants.
The Romans and Celts noted the rise and fall of water in plants during the
phases of the moon, but it took centuries before modern scien sts confirmed
their knowledge, and some plantsmen coincide plan ng with the moon phases
to this day. The soil’s temperature would also be checked, to see if warm
enough to plant, by scrubbing aside some soil and either using the palm of the
hand, the elbow or, if daring, a bare bo om to test it. We all took note, and at
the moment are wishing for warmer days before the ul mate test !
The compe on this month was a flower from your garden.

Much has happened since March 2022
when the proposal was unanimously
turned down by Cotswold District
Council and this note is a summary of
the journey travelled by our local
community since the developer
appealed against the decision in
September 2022.
A date was set for a national Public
Inquiry by the Planning Inspectorate.
Because of the complexity of the case, the
Inquiry was split into two sessions – each
lasting 3 days.
In advance of the first session in
January 2023, a group of residents now
known as CARG (Cotswold AONB
Residents’ Group) got together to decide
how best to support the District Council to
defend their decision. A barrister and a
planning consultant were appointed by
CARG, and fundraising began in earnest
to ensure we could meet any financial
commitments and hand-on heart say that
the community had done its best to protect
our beautiful green fields and surrounding
countryside.
And, at this point, we want to say a
massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who
donated to this cause. We all know the
current economic situation, so it is really
heartening to see local people so
passionate about saving our local area
from inappropriate development,
especially since several better alternative
sites for a truck stop have already been
identified outside the AONB area.
The Inquiry focusses on the reasons for
Cotswold District Council’s refusal for
planning permission, which is because the
site, located within the Cotswolds Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB),
contravenes aspects of the Countryside
and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CDC has a
statutory duty to conserve and enhance
the natural beauty of the AONB), the
Cotswold District Local Plan and the
National Planning Policy Framework.
The second session was due to begin
20th
April but was adjourned by the
Planning Inspector at the last minute due
to unforeseen circumstances. We are
now expecting it to take place in May.
You can find more information about the
background to the campaign and how to
donate on the CARG website:
www.thecarg.co.uk. We hope to hear of
a decision by July.

Do you want to be part of a
friendly team helping your

callers without an appointment -

ing information, signposting to
other agencies when needed (no

inward and outbound post.
You must be computer literate but
full training in triage and our IT

volunteer their time get a lot back.
We’ll give you all the training you

you.”

  • 6. May 2023 6 strattonnews@gmail.com C G Cirencester’s Gardening Club Stratton & Baunton Horticultural Society cirencestergardeningclub.co.uk April has been dogged by heavy showers, wind and occasional bursts of sun- shine. Luckily our mee ng evening was dry and we were very pleased to welcome a roomful of members, with a couple of visitors for our talk by Katherine Kear, who came to give a talk en tled ‘Tales from the Po ng Shed’. Katherine began by saying that ritual beliefs are important in our lives: to look back to learn from the past that we are not masters of nature, but merely gardeners of nature. We were read a deligh ul poem by Richard Edwards ‘ Ten Tall Oak Trees’ - how one-by-one ten trees are felled un l there are none – a sobering thought. Katherine described how nature gives us plants to use as medicines: pulmonaria for the lungs; strawberries for the heart; woundwort for self heal, but you should respect your plants and give thanks to the spirits of the garden - even King Charles talks to his plants. The Romans and Celts noted the rise and fall of water in plants during the phases of the moon, but it took centuries before modern scien sts confirmed their knowledge, and some plantsmen coincide plan ng with the moon phases to this day. The soil’s temperature would also be checked, to see if warm enough to plant, by scrubbing aside some soil and either using the palm of the hand, the elbow or, if daring, a bare bo om to test it. We all took note, and at the moment are wishing for warmer days before the ul mate test ! The compe on this month was a flower from your garden. 1st Sue Walton -an anemone , 2nd Alan Barnes – a snake’s head fri llary, 3rd Pam Barnes – a clema s. Our next mee ng is on Thursday 11th May at Stra on Village Hall, 7.30pm. Our speaker has a talk on the Bathurst Estates. There will also be a coffee morning and plant sale on Saturday 20th May at 4 Stra on Brook on 10am to 12noon All are welcome

  • 10. May 2023 10 strattonnews@gmail.com SCOPE SHOP Donations Wanted Please! Summer Clothing, handbags, shoes Men’s and ladies’ accessories, Small electrics Bring to the Scope Shop at 24a Dyer Street, Cirencester. We are a charity that supports the disabled. and campaigns for equal opportunities for the disabled. We raise funds through the shop and are always looking for good quality donations. Thank you. C N Much has happened since March 2022 when the proposal was unanimously turned down by Cotswold District Council and this note is a summary of the journey travelled by our local community since the developer appealed against the decision in September 2022. A date was set for a national Public Inquiry by the Planning Inspectorate. Because of the complexity of the case, the Inquiry was split into two sessions – each lasting 3 days. In advance of the first session in January 2023, a group of residents now known as CARG (Cotswold AONB Residents’ Group) got together to decide how best to support the District Council to defend their decision. A barrister and a planning consultant were appointed by CARG, and fundraising began in earnest to ensure we could meet any financial commitments and hand-on heart say that the community had done its best to protect our beautiful green fields and surrounding countryside. And, at this point, we want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who donated to this cause. We all know the current economic situation, so it is really heartening to see local people so passionate about saving our local area from inappropriate development, especially since several better alternative sites for a truck stop have already been identified outside the AONB area. The Inquiry focusses on the reasons for Cotswold District Council’s refusal for planning permission, which is because the site, located within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), contravenes aspects of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CDC has a statutory duty to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the AONB), the Cotswold District Local Plan and the National Planning Policy Framework. The second session was due to begin 20th April but was adjourned by the Planning Inspector at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. We are now expecting it to take place in May. You can find more information about the background to the campaign and how to donate on the CARG website: www.thecarg.co.uk. We hope to hear of a decision by July.
