Strange events Chapter 16 Record holders
Diving swimming Wonders
Sperm whales
Thomas Laumeyer - Oceanwide-expeditions.com
These giants with biggest head and largest brain
apex predators equipped with power of echolocation
producing loudest sound in animal kingdom
killing prey with a big bang
generated by 320 decibels - equal to the noise
produced by Saturn V rocket and heard at 1 meter distance
are deep diving champions chasing prey
up to the depth of 7382 ft inside the sea again and again.
Used to be hunted mercilessly by greedy men
for their spermaceti and ambergris again and again .
Strange events record holders
Elephant Seals
Jan Roletto-NOAA –Public domain Hull Warren – Wc – cc
These earless furry pinnipeds
with specially equipped nose and round eyes
dwellers of the coldest areas of the seas
are virtually ‘Elephants of the seas’
what with huge heavy bodies and long proboscis
differing however in having blubber covered bodies
capacity to dive deep under surface of the seas
right up to 5090 feet or more
and moulting in the normal course.
There most interesting feature is, however,
their habit of snatching a sleep or nap
during trips up and down in the sea .
Strange events record holders
Emperor penguins
G.Zibordi-NOAA-Wc-Public domain Mtpaley – Wc - cc
Being biggest ,tallest, and heaviest among Penguins
they are emperors of all the dwellers of the Antarctic land or seas
The only bird which can stand up and walk upright almost like us
albeit awkwardly like a drunkard or sliding on belly over snow or ice
swim fast flapping flippers and porpoising swiftly
or Scuba dive - deep up to even 3000 ft inside the sea .
To live in severe cold they wear a coat of dense feathers over
a layer of sub-dermal fat and huddle together ;
indulging in thermo regulation
slow down their metabolism and even
shut off non essential functions!
Strange events record holders
They take care of their new born babies – mother and father taking turns
but papa feeds the baby with ‘crop-milk’ when mama is away, surprises
Unlike other birds they don’t have wings but flippers
with which they can virtually fly inside waters !
They moult like other birds but have solid , not hollow, bones ;!
And are really amazing in various features and ways.
Strange events record holders
Squids
Citron .- Wc – Public domain Russ Hopcroft – antartica.gov.au
Flying squadron !
K Muramatsu – global.hokudai.ac.jp
Cephalopods are some of the most wonderful animals
And Squids are “Jet fighters among cephalopods”
or as some say “ Rock star of jet propulsion” and
swimming backwards “like a rocket” or a “torpedo”
Strange events record holders
they move pretty fast – up to 33 Km per hour in water
fly up to 11.2 meters per second in air
beating U.Bolt’s 2012 Olympic record of 10.31 meters/sec. ;
although they take to air for 3 seconds only at a time
covering up to 160 ft at one go they do so gliding actively
flying by spreading fins and arms, like wings
but how they take to air is even more interesting
for they shoot out of water into air
by the force of their unique jet propulsion .
flying in groups in the style of a squadron’s formation !
They actually move by more than one way
Normally slow jetting and gently swimming
by flapping fins, ,fast jetting while hunting
gliding or flying to escape predators
Squids have many more qualities
to boast about
“Master of camouflage ” nick named as
“Chameleons of the sea ” they are
Strange events record holders
really able to change colour much faster
and in many more varied patterns .
and used ,besides protection, also for
signaling to warn a rival , attract a mate
or to mutually communicate .
Some of them are bioluminescent using
light to dazzle predator or prey; but what is
much more interesting and amazing is
that we can even read in their light always !
They are proud possessors of two very large eyes
of the size of a volleyball ! –the biggest in animal kingdom
fitted with light organs used as head lights ! by some
and ability to see all around due to 180°vision!provided by them
Our sense of taste is in our tongue only
their taste sense is spread all over their body!
they have very developed senses of touch
smell and balance as well .,however,
Strange events record holders
it is the power of intelligence which has earned these
clever guys the title of the ‘most intelligent invertebrates’
possessors indeed of very large giant axons - as well .
They not only use their cunning ways
for camouflage by controllable chromatophores
and iridophores or lighting by photophores
but also for utilizing
their ink cloud creation ability for confusing
or confounding predator or prey.
Their females are also credited with very large ovaries
of the size of a football ! ;and males of some species
with very long penis –up to 26’’inches long !indeed !
Talking of size –well ,they include amongst them
Giant Squids of the size of buses !
the largest invertebrates.in the world as well.
Such are these amazing animals -holders of half a dozen records
which keep astonishing us by their astounding qualities and ways.

  • 1. Strange events Chapter 16 Record holders Diving swimming Wonders Sperm whales Thomas Laumeyer - Oceanwide-expeditions.com These giants with biggest head and largest brain apex predators equipped with power of echolocation producing loudest sound in animal kingdom killing prey with a big bang generated by 320 decibels - equal to the noise produced by Saturn V rocket and heard at 1 meter distance are deep diving champions chasing prey up to the depth of 7382 ft inside the sea again and again. Used to be hunted mercilessly by greedy men for their spermaceti and ambergris again and again .
  • 2. Strange events record holders Elephant Seals Jan Roletto-NOAA –Public domain Hull Warren – Wc – cc These earless furry pinnipeds with specially equipped nose and round eyes dwellers of the coldest areas of the seas are virtually ‘Elephants of the seas’ what with huge heavy bodies and long proboscis differing however in having blubber covered bodies capacity to dive deep under surface of the seas right up to 5090 feet or more and moulting in the normal course. There most interesting feature is, however, their habit of snatching a sleep or nap during trips up and down in the sea .
  • 3. Strange events record holders Emperor penguins G.Zibordi-NOAA-Wc-Public domain Mtpaley – Wc - cc Being biggest ,tallest, and heaviest among Penguins they are emperors of all the dwellers of the Antarctic land or seas The only bird which can stand up and walk upright almost like us albeit awkwardly like a drunkard or sliding on belly over snow or ice swim fast flapping flippers and porpoising swiftly or Scuba dive - deep up to even 3000 ft inside the sea . To live in severe cold they wear a coat of dense feathers over a layer of sub-dermal fat and huddle together ; indulging in thermo regulation slow down their metabolism and even shut off non essential functions!
  • 4. Strange events record holders They take care of their new born babies – mother and father taking turns but papa feeds the baby with ‘crop-milk’ when mama is away, surprises Unlike other birds they don’t have wings but flippers with which they can virtually fly inside waters ! They moult like other birds but have solid , not hollow, bones ;! And are really amazing in various features and ways.

  • 6. Strange events record holders they move pretty fast – up to 33 Km per hour in water fly up to 11.2 meters per second in air beating U.Bolt’s 2012 Olympic record of 10.31 meters/sec. ; although they take to air for 3 seconds only at a time covering up to 160 ft at one go they do so gliding actively flying by spreading fins and arms, like wings but how they take to air is even more interesting for they shoot out of water into air by the force of their unique jet propulsion . flying in groups in the style of a squadron’s formation ! They actually move by more than one way Normally slow jetting and gently swimming by flapping fins, ,fast jetting while hunting gliding or flying to escape predators Squids have many more qualities to boast about “Master of camouflage ” nick named as “Chameleons of the sea ” they are
  • 7. Strange events record holders really able to change colour much faster and in many more varied patterns . and used ,besides protection, also for signaling to warn a rival , attract a mate or to mutually communicate .
