Strain comparison in breeding programs allows breeders to match the best strains, reduce inbreeding, and use molecular information to determine genetic variation between strains for more effective genetic improvement. There are three main types of designs for strain comparison: sib design which uses males, females and progeny from each strain; nested design where one individual is mated with another group; and factorial design where all individuals from different strains are bred with all strains.
