This document discusses using stories and storytelling for hope and healing. It begins with having participants watch and reflect on the short film "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore." It then discusses how stories can act as windows, mirrors, and doors. Stories are windows that allow views of different worldviews. They are mirrors that reflect our own experiences. And they are doors that inspire imagination and action. The document suggests making a list of stories that have served these functions. It concludes by saying a future discussion will explore the restorative power of storytelling and techniques that highlight care, joy and compassion.

2. Let us begin our priming session by watching a short
animation, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris
Lessmore (Joyce & Oldenburg, 2012).

4. On a notebook or sheet of paper, write down
or draw your impression of the story.
• What did you see?
• What did you hear?
• How did you feel?
• Was there an element in the short film that disturbed you or affirmed your
beliefs on stories, books and libraries and the crises and disasters that befall
humanity?

5. Let us now look at stories.

6. Stories are windows.
• Stories open us unto world views of the author
and/or the creators of the book.
• Stories ignite and challenge our world views.
• Stories allow us to see different world views: the
author’s/creators’, the characters in the stories
and our own, as well as other readers of the
story.

7. Stories are mirrors.
• Stories amplify our dreams and reflects
our joys and pains because they are made
and told by people just like you and me.
• We see ourselves in the pages of a book,
in a character in a movie, in a scene or
dialogue in a Kdrama series and in the
lines or lyrics of music and poetry.

8. Stories are doors.
• Stories show us opportunities for
thinking and growing one’s curiosity.
• Stories invite us to imagine, to play and to
wonder!
• Stories inspire us to take action.
• Stories invite us to leave our comfort
zones and take part in the bigger
community.

9. Think of stories that have become doors, windows and
mirrors in your life. Make a list in your notebook or
journal.

10. What of Storytelling?
Storytelling is an avenue to the benefits and
the delight of stories.
We will have a lengthier encounter with stories and storytelling. We
will explore its restorative values, as well as strategies and
techniques in storytelling that highlight care, joy and compassion.
