01 Preface
This course is based on their text with our effort, slight modifications
and error updated if necessary. We also gave the Chinese-English
vocabulary expansion in footnotes. We edited and collected more than
300 thousands Chinese-English vocabularies and sentences with the
best possible English translation. This is our effort in oversea Chinese
Teaching as second language. We believe the better translation will
help students in Chinese learning.
A Chinese idiom story, or fable will not only tell you the meaning of a
phrase, but also help you learn more about ancient Chinese culture, to
trace the root of Chinese language. This course is perfect for
intermediate level learners (HSK4 - HSK6) to peek into Chinese culture,
thought and history, in addition to improving language.

The transmission of Chinese culture from generation to generation is a
key factor in the continuation and development worldwide of overseas
Chinese communities. It is also an important reason why overseas
Chinese communities grow, identify themselves with the Chinese
nation, and love the China passionately. The face that all overseas
Chinese are willing to carry forward cultural orthoxy, revere the aged
and honor the wise, cement peaceful relations by upholding good faith,
venerate ethics, value tradition, coexist in harmony, and preserve
differences while striving for similarities, is attributable above all to the
civilizing educational impact of Chinese culture.

Every day they went into the fields to work hard. They carefully got rid
of weeds in the fields, and they fertilized and irrigated the fields with
great care. Strange to say, day after day, the stout branches of the rice
plants didn’t produce ears of grain.
26
But on the sides of the ridges between the plots of land, some wild
grasses which were very much like rice plants, grew taller and taller
every day, and no one know when they secretly set out very small
blossoms.

One day, the farmers came to the fields on inspection. They were
looking at the rice plants that hadn’t borne fruit and they didn’t know
what was the right thing to do, when suddenly they saw that the ridges
between the fields were full of blossoming wild grasses.

When Zhuang Bao returned home, the more he thought about his
experience the more curious he felt about it. So he went out to call on
Mencius and tell him what had happened. Mencius told him, “If King
Xuan loves music to that extreme, there is then hope that the state of
Qi will become strong.”
“
”
Not long after, King Xuan called in Mencius. Mencius asked the king,
“You have told Zhuang Bao that you enjoy music. Is this true?”

The flowing water in the river gave Confucius a deep impression,
making Confucius repeatedly praised it. Of course, there are still many
impressions printed by the river. For example, when the river is quiet, it
is gentle like a sheep. However, when the river is angry, it is like a
galloping horse. Do not know how you look at the water? Let's take a
look at Mencius' views and feelings about water.

“So the objects used in Mr. Hsu’s house must all be individually
bartered for with rice. That’s too much of a bother. Why doesn’t he
make them himself?”
……
“This….”Ch’en Hsiang’s tongue seemed to be tied in a knot, and he
could not say another sentence.
“One person really cannot and need not personally make everything he
needs each day. Some people labor with their bodies and others with
their minds, but all contribute their efforts to human society.
Therefore, to demand that the ruler of a country till the fields with the
people is neither what the ruler wants to do nor can do. Moreover, the
ruler’s duties are too great and the things he must do too many.”

Finally Mencius said with determination,” All I hope, looking at the
crazy world, is to use all my strength to influence people to discuss right
and wrong. I don’t like to argue, I just have unavoidable reasons for
doing it.”
