Primary engineer is a not for profit organisation that offer schools a way to deliver Mathematics and science to design technology activities. These are mapped to the curriculum and designed to inspire and enthuse and the purpose of the talk is to further bring together the Institution with young people interested in a career in lighting. Working closely with industry, major companies and institutions such as Scottish Engineering, institution of Mechanical Engineers and the University of Strathclyde. The initiative has progressed at a pace with councils looking to extend engagement with schools. We have long held the belief that engineering should be part of the school curriculum. New Zealand aka Middle Earth, a land of Hobbits, Orcs, Wine, Sheep and All Blacks (Rugby), but Road Lighting, somewhere that time forgot, until now. Ten years ago, NZ presented limited market opportunities with supply dominated by two local manufacturers. The introduction of European suppliers with high performance flat glass Luminaires began a steady change which has become an avalanche with the introduction of LED Road Lighting, driven by two Local Authorities – Auckland Transport and Christchurch City Council – who between them are responsible for 50 % of all the road lighting. This presentation outlines the rapid changes that have occurred in past 5 years. The application of LED technology has created new challenges for Engineers and Local Authorities alike that has required a new approach to the provision of Road Lighting as a public asset. As sustainability and energy efficiency requirements continue in relevance to lighting installations the question of being able to assign an efficiency rating to public lighting installations (A through to G) requires consideration. This paper looks at how the application of an energy efficiency rating can be considered for road lighting and will reference work undertaken in Spain, the Netherlands, and Australia as well as within the EU under their Directives and good practice guidance. It also considers the requirements for measuring the energy performance of road lighting installations as laid out in the draft Standard prEN13201-5:2013, Performance requirements. PLS 2014: Kings Cross Square

Construction has recently completed at Kings Cross Square. studioFRACTAL the Lighting Designers on the project were involved from competition stage through to construction. The square is the new entrance to the wider and ever expending Kings Cross central and Kings Cross station. Since the 1970’s the square has been covered by a large bulky metal canopy which unfortunately blocked views of the prestigious Grade 1 listed ‘Cubitt’ façade. These have now been removed to reveal for the first time in 150 years a remarkable façade and a new open public square. The square is populated with various functional structures and has a footfall of approximately 140,000 users a day; factors such as these made it an incredibly complex, highly challenging project in need of innovative design solutions. Throughout the process studioFRACTAL worked with the design team, stakeholders and local authorises, all who were all key to the success of this project. An all LED lighting scheme was created. Use of LED luminaires provided the known benefits of long life and reduced energy consumption. In addition the size of the products became paramount to the design ensuring concealed and integrated lighting could be used. Three tall bespoke lighting columns were designed and developed and became an integral part of the project, situated to address the size of the station façade. Additionally smaller lighting columns and the square’s architectural objects and structures were used to provide the overall lit results, with illuminated historic façade as a back drop. PLS 2014: BIM – Why it needs careful thought

With the UK government insisting on the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) for all their projects starting from 2016, the use of the BIM process will become inescapable. Although BIM has been available for many years this decision has prompted a surge of BIM requests within the construction industry. This has filtered through to the lighting industry and many companies are establishing BIM teams to deal with this influx. This paper takes a look at what BIM is, the benefits it can bring in an ideal world and some of the issues to getting started. It will look at the queries that are being raised from different users within the lighting industry and what resources are available to deal with these queries. Talk by Kelly Smith, Zumtobel Group

Maintenance Factors & LEDs: Are they being used correctly?

In order to properly predict the performance of an LED lighting system and to accurately compare results to competing LED and conventional lighting systems, lighting engineers and designers must be particularly careful to use appropriate LED Maintenance Factors. Calculations to predict performance lighting installation are fundamental to the practice of lighting design and lighting engineering. These calculations allow lighting engineers and designers to predict lighting performance and whether the design meets and complies with the correct specification and performance recommendations. In the European research project Smart Light Concepts (SLIC), researchers from Avans University of Applied Sciences and Portsmouth University explore, together with city and provincial authorities in 4 countries (Belgium, France, the Netherlands and United Kingdom), different solutions for reducing carbon emissions from public lighting. The role of public lighting is twofold, it has to make the night time environment both safe and appear to be safe. This is not that straight forward as the perception of safety is not directly related to actual safety. The feeling of safety is dependent on a whole series of factors including personal history, location and time. Whilst it is clear that darkness reduces feelings of safety it is less obvious what is the best way to provide light to improve safety. A session on lighting and planning, delivered by two planning policy officers from nationally protected landscapes. Paul Fellows is Head of Strategic Planning at North York Moors National Park Authority, which along with the Yorkshire Dales National Park was granted International Dark Skies status in December 2020. Natalie Beal is a policy planner at the Broads Authority. Both are Members of the Royal Town Planning Institute. Natalie and Paul will deliver an hour long session that will be in three parts. Firstly, an introduction to how the planning system works. They will then focus on how lighting can be influenced through the planning system.
