Stationary waves are formed when two waves of equal amplitude and wavelength traveling in opposite directions interfere with each other in a medium. The result is that the medium vibrates back and forth but there is no net propagation of energy. Standing waves are created by the superposition of traveling waves with the same frequency but traveling in opposite directions.
