Both urban design and sustainability are about creating better places to be. What role can service design play in supporting these practices?
There are already many examples of service design projects delivering sustainability outcomes, particularly in community and health. Despite this Service Design Thinking is not yet widely in evidence as an explicit approach in corporate sustainability and urban design in Australia, even while emerging and conventional activities in both areas exhibit service design attributes.
Clearly there is a role for service design approaches beyond those already in place today. This presentation on projects in the Australian property sector looks at the level of service design activity already embedded, as well as future opportunities for service design practice, and how they might present.
Allied to these considerations, urban informatics (UI) and community informatics (CI) are providing data and tools to better inform people’s experience of place and the design process. They support frameworks as diverse as new government legislation and the Green Building Council of Australia’s Greenstar Communities tool. We also look at the role of UI and CI in urban design and sustainability.
Siobhan Toohill is an Urban Designer & Sustainability professional. Adrian Wiggins is a UCD practitioner. In 2010 they began a discussion about the intersection of their two worlds. This presentation is part of that discussion.

Everything is a Service: New Perspectives on Assessing the Library Using Serv...Joe Marquez
Academic librarians are not new to designing or assessing services, but we tend to develop these services in isolation from other services we offer. We need to see the whole library as an integrated and tightly coupled system. Enter service design. Service design is a holistic, co-creative methodology that puts the user at the center of the service delivery model. Service design offers a framework and mindset to assess and contextualize services so we can see the whole picture. When viewed this way, the library's interconnections are made tangible and we, as service providers, can see the library as a unified experience as our users do. The end result is better service for our users.

Almere Homeruskwartier: A place built by peopleRUDINewcastle
Jaqueline Tellinga, District Manager Homeruskwartier, Almere, Almere is a Dutch new town developed from the 1970s on reclaimed land. Since 2006, the site has been home to an innovative experiment in large-scale self build on a 100-hectare site owned and masterplanned by the local authority. Some 3,000 self-built homes will be built. The site is not sought-after but has good access and transport links, making it viable. Jaqcueline suggested that a strong vision and political support, combined with an extremely clear, non-complex approach to design codes, regulation and governance from the local authority has been key to the project’s popularity. The site has been successfully developed in a remarkably short time. Its key feature is the effective partnerships and clear communication between the public authority and the people who are creating their own homes and community

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.
