This document summarizes the standard industrial process used by Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co. Pvt. Ltd for their refrigerator and compressor manufacturing plant in Mohali. Originally, raw materials were sourced from distant vendors, requiring large inventories and logistics. To improve efficiency, the company developed local vendors in nearby cities who could deliver raw materials just in time on the same day with minimal turnaround. Stringent quality processes were established for local vendors. Over time, more vendors were brought onto the just-in-time system, eliminating inventory needs and freeing up space while increasing efficiency and working capital.

2. INTRODUCTION
• The project has been done for the first evaluation
of Knowledge Management under the guidance
of Mr. Supratik Ghatak
• Company covered - Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co. Pvt.
Ltd (Appliances Division), Mohali
• The company uses JUST IN TIME (JIT) and Direct
on Line (DOL) methodology to make the
manufacturing process more efficient and
streamlined.

3. ABOUT THE PROCESS
• Mohali plant is manufacturing Refrigerators and Compressors .
• No vendors supplying Raw Material (RM) located at Mohali.
• RM vendors located in industrial townships of Pune, Chennai,
Ranjangaon, NCR and other far off places.
• Large inventory required to be maintained.
• Logistics issues and large carbon footprint
• Reduced working capital.
• High carrying and handling cost.
• Large storage area required.

4. ABOUT THE PROCESS
• Need felt to have local vendors.
• Local vendors developed at Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Ambala, Ludhiana
etc.
• Local vendors provided support – technical know how, help in appropriate
manpower recruitment, assured minimum business.
• Processes defined, improved upon and stringent quality norms fixed.
• RM delivered on same day / with minimum turnaround time.
• Gradually multiple vendors developed to increase competitiveness

5. ABOUT THE PROCESS
• RM put through stringent incoming quality check.
• Frequent visits to local vendors ensured adherence to SOPs and quality standards.
• Gradually confidence set in and processes were firmed in.
• System of JIT/DOL developed . Gradually more and more vendors taken on JIT/DOL system
• Advantages:-
– Green product
– Did away requirement of holding of inventory.
– Storage space earlier used for RM inventory used for further expansion
– More working capital available
– More efficient system came in
