Learning Learning In order to become skilled, we have to develop our abilities through practice. In other words, we have to learn. Learning can be defined as a relatively permanent change in behaviour. It can be measured by assessing performance.
The Three Learning Phases 1 The Three Learning Phases It is thought that when we learn we go through three distinct phases: 1. The cognitive phase. This is the beginner’s stage, when the learner is trying to understand the basics. 2. The associative phase. This is the practice stage, when the learner can show a big improvement.
The Three Learning Phases 2 The Three Learning Phases... 3. The autonomous phase. In this final stage, the performer is now at an advanced level.  The movements are almost automatic.  In this stage the performer can think ahead and not concentrate on the details of their own movement.
Practice 1 Practice Once a skill is learnt, it has to be practised for it to become autonomous.  There are two ways in which we practise skills: whole practice and part practice.
Practice 2 Practice... Whole practice: This is used when skills are basic and all of the action can be practised in one go. Part practice: This is used when skills are more complex.  Skills can be broken down into smaller parts. These are then practised being combined to make the complete skill.
