Fostering an Effective Learning Session
It is a group of «Learning Situations» that each
teacher designs and organizes in a logical
sequence to develop a determined set of expected
learning outcomes proposed in the lesson.
The learning session consists of a set of intentional
and organized actions done among the teacher,
students, and the learning object.

ELEMENTS OF THE LEARNING SESSION
CAPACITIES /
ATTITUDES
(LEARNING GOALS)

Capacities that will be developed having into account the
cognitive, motor, and socio-affective processes which involve
their demonstration in particular mental processes
It is made up of a group of activities that allow to measure
students’ learning.

LESSON SEQUENCE
(LEARNING STRATEGIES)

They are designed as learning activities that have been
selected and sequenced in terms of the cognitive or
motor processes considering the specific capacity to be
developed
The pedagogic processes are recurring and they don’t
have a fixed moment.

EVALUATION
(RUBRICS)

They are made up of the criteria, rubrics and if it may be
the case instruments that will allow to collect information
and take decisions that will assure the learning goals.
In some cases, ti has a grade but in others it doesn’t.

THEY ARE THE PROCESSES THE TEACHER
CARRIES ON TO GUIDE STUDENTS’ LEARNING.

a session may vary according to teachers.
The proposal here is of 3 moments: beginning, process, and output.
Let’s observe what aspects are considered in each one.

Activities / Strategies

Resources

T

Starting motivation:
Strategies to call the attention and compromise students with the work to be developed
Exploring prior knowledge:
Using different strategies that will allow the teacher to know the level of knowledge about the
Beginning topic and their capacity in relation to it.
Arising the problem: Generating cognitive conflict
It means generating a cognitive unbalanced state that will make students ask themselves
questions or arise a problem.

Process

Output

Building the new knowledge
It is here where rich dynamic strategies are applied which will allow to have the student as
the center so that he will build up his own knowledge. This will let him develop capacities.
Applying what he has been learning.
The student must show, starting with the solution of different situation, the development of
his capacity. In this process, the teacher practically verifies if the students was able to
develop his capacity in the expected time.
Feedback
A feedback allows the teacher to return to the same capacity but with different learning
situations.
Transfer of extension
It consists on finding out situations in their own context that may be satisfactorily solved in
the mastering of the capacity.
Metacognition
Strategies that will allow them to reflect about their learning processes can be used.

How will you evaluate the capacity?
V. EVALUATION
Criteria

Indicators

Tools

All sessions must have an evaluating matrix that will allow the
teacher has information about students’ achievements and base on
that communicate the results.

Attitude

It is the observable behavior. In order to give a grade in attitude,
the behavior has to be observed.

CONCLUSIONS
The learning session is planned and executed
according to each teacher’s style.
There are no pre-established formulas or routes;
however, this does not leave out we pay attention to
some characteristics:

Fostering an Effective Learning Session
 Program the learning session based on the capacities and
attitudes that are to be developed. Knowledge has meaning
insofar as it contributes to develop capacities.
 Foresee strategies for the development of capacities as well as
knowledge and attitudes.
 Approach the capacities to be developed in an articulated way
in order to guarantee more significant and functional learning.
 Permanently activate background knowledge.
 Generate cognitive conflicts that will always raise students’
reflection.
Fostering an Effective Learning Session
 Apply different techniques in order to process information
(conceptual maps, diagrams, semantics nets, etc.)
 Foresee strategies so students can transfer their learning into
new situations.
 Foresees strategies that will favor student’s permanent
reflection about his/her own learning so as to contribute to the
development of metacognition.
 Promote situations of active and cooperative participation that
will make possible the development of attitudes and values.
 Evaluate during the whole process in order to provide feedback
as needed.
