Automating Your Daily Tasks with Scripting - RubyConf 2015 TaiwanAdler Hsieh
This talk aims to go through basic scripting skills in Ruby. Participants will have a better understanding in managing their daily tasks with scripting. For example, we can setup automated scripts to delete old files on a daily basis instead of doing it manually. These can be done with Bash, Perl and many other scripting languages, but among of which Ruby is better known for its readability. It is easier to write, maintain, and reuse. It saves some time on system management and allows us to put more focus on the projects.
Managing SharePoint Anywhere with Windows PowerShellRyan Dennis
With the growing adoption of Office 365 and SharePoint Online and the continued prevalence of SharePoint on-premises, it’s becoming more difficult to manage both environments in an automated fashion. While SharePoint Online does have native support for Windows PowerShell, there are very few cmdlets to manage the sites and site contents. SharePoint on-premises gives us well over 700 cmdlets, but it still doesn’t answer every situational scenario – leaving gaps in functionality which can be filled by scripters.
In this demo-heavy session, focused on both the developer AND the administrator – you’ll see how you can use one shell to manage both scenarios (on-premises and Office 365). Demonstrations will focus on building PowerShell Scripts and Advanced Functions for both target environments, and by the end of the session you’ll be ready to start Managing SharePoint Anywhere with PowerShell.

(BDT402) Performance Profiling in Production: Analyzing Web Requests at Scale...Amazon Web Services
Code profiling gives a rich, detailed view of runtime performance. However, it's difficult to achieve in production: for even a small fraction of web requests, huge challenges in scalability, access, and ease of use appear. Despite this, Yelp profiles a nontrivial fraction of its traffic by combining Amazon EC2, Amazon EMR, and Amazon S3. Developers can search, sort, filter, and combine interesting profiles; during a site slowdown or page failure, this allows a fast diagnosis and speedy recovery. Some of our analyses run nightly, while others run in real-time via Storm topologies. This session includes our use cases for code profiling, its benefits, and the implementation of its handlers and analysis flows. We include both performance results and implementation challenges of our MapReduce and Storm jobs, including code overviews. We also touch on issues such as concurrent logging, cross-data center replication, job scheduling, and API definitions.

RUM isn’t just for page level metrics anymore. Thanks to modern browser updates and new techniques we can collect real user data at the object level, finding slow page components and keeping third parties honest.
In this talk we will show you how to use Resource Timing, User Timing, and other browser tricks to time the most important components in your page. We’ll also share recipes for several of the web’s most popular third parties. This will give you a head start on measuring object level performance on your own site.

Does Behaviour Driven Development have a role in the infrastructure world? Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure where systems administrators can apply some simple open source tools and BDD principles to make infrastructure management more powerful, more insightful and deliver more value to their customers.
The typical enterprise monitoring and configuration management set-up for a website is:
- Is the Apache package installed and the appropriate version?
- Is the Apache service running?
- Can I connect to the HTTP port and is HTML returned?
- Multiply this by a few hundred iterations of hosts and types of services and you’re probably looking at your typical Nagios, Puppet, Cfengine, Hyperic set-up.
All this monitoring misses something critical though – we’re not actually monitoring that the service does what it should. Yes, it matters whether Apache is installed, the Apache service is running, and you can connect to HTTP but does this actually prove anything about the availability of the service we’re managing and providing for our customers? Nope…
We need to demonstrate more than just a check that says the Apache server is up. We need to demonstrate that the service delivered by that infrastructure was available to our customers AND functioning as intended.
Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure or BDI which applies the principles of Behavioural Driven Development to the management of infrastructure. In this presentation you’ll learn:
- How Behaviour Driven Development works
- What makes a behavioural test
- How to install and use Cucumber to perform BDI
- Practical examples of behavioural tests in Cucumber, and
- How to integrate BDI into your work flow and your enterprise monitoring and configuration management frameworks.
Surprisingly many web developers don't realize that Javascript ecosystem is not the same as it was few years ago, when building a single-page web application was considered risky business.
Those times are way behind. Modern javascript MVC frameworks are if not silver, but certainly solid bullets which every person who wants to use benefits of evolution should be aware of.
I'll tell you about challenges that happen when you build a single-page application, about REST interface, and certainly about one of such frameworks: AngularJS, created by hackers from Google keeping in mind best software development principles such as TDD and dependency injections. That's why writing with AngularJS is such a pleasure.
Confused by testing terms and jargon? This talk walks through testing web applications, explaining the difference between unit testing and end to end testing. Several tools and concepts are also explored through a demo section.
Sample projects can be found at https://github.com/sethmcl/testing_web_applications.
Web developers now have a large number of APIs available allowing them to harness complex functionality via JavaScript and produce ever more interesting web experiences. This presentation looks at where we can from, where APIs are going in the future, and what problems we are currently in the process of solving. This includes Multimedia, Offline, device hardware access, internationalization, and more.
This session introduces the Spring Web Scripts and the Spring Surf framework describing how they are used to underpin the Alfresco Share user interface. As well as covering the basic concepts, this session will cover the history and future roadmap for the frameworks.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
